DeForest, WI – After 48 years as a member of LIUNA, John Schmidt, president of Wisconsin Workers’ District Council, has announced his retirement from September 1, 2022.

John started his career in A.D. In 2010, he was elected president / business manager of the Wisconsin Workers’ District Council.

Mr. Schmidt’s tenure as president / business manager came at a time of turmoil for the Wisconsin labor movement, which included repealing state wage laws, suspending project workers’ contracts on public works projects, and passing “rights” to workers. Despite this, the Wisconsin Workers’ District Council, led by John, continues to grow in membership and market share.

John negotiated collective bargaining agreements with employer contractors for employee and management benefits. As trustee of the Health and Pension Fund, John was responsible for helping to grow and consolidate these funds for past, present and future laboratories.

Additional leadership positions include serving as Wisconsin Workers ‘Cooperative and Education Trust (LECET), co-chair of the Wisconsin Workers’ Training and Training Fund, and chair of the State Training Committee for Construction Workers. John sits on the Board of Trustees and the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO and Transport Development Association.

Other highlights of John’s leadership were doubling the size of the Wisconsin Workers’ Training Center, as well as helping to select laboratory-supported candidates in 2018, including Governor Tony Evers.
