Students in Wicklow are being called on to take part in a competition aimed at raising awareness of ways to combat fast fashion.
Elove Fashion is a school competition that challenges students to look closely at how people dress and make a fashion statement without making an extra demand on resources. Designed by local authorities in partnership with the Rediscovery Centre, the competition has launched in time for the new school year.
For example, fashion has an impact on the environment as the production of cotton for textiles is harmful, and clothing production and international shipping to customers and stores has a high carbon footprint.
The message is that fashion should not be fast and temporary.
Quality clothes and fabrics can be very durable and a good outfit is timeless and beautiful.
The ability to work with textiles, reinventing and giving them a new lease of life has always been at the heart of the fashion industry. This competition aims to allow students to test their design skills using old fabrics or create something out of old clothes. A new modern look is created without using new tools.
Part of the circular economy vision is to move from disposable fast fashion to an industry that uses a circular economy, creating jobs while saving resources and adding value to products.
Relove Fashion gives students a platform to showcase their ability to work with textiles, their creativity in design and their commitment to sustainability. Entrants, who can be individuals or groups, must register their design process in the mood board, produce their clothes in early January and ask for their opinions on sustainability in the textile and fashion industries. The competition is open to all secondary school students in Wicklow and fits in well with the Home Economics curriculum and the Art curriculum. In some schools it was run as a transitional year project.
Wicklow County Council, which led the development of the competition, won the Outstanding Local Government Award for Innovation.
Students can register to take part at www.relofeshion.ie. Everyone who registers by September 30th will be entered into a free drawing to win a sewing machine for their school.
The costume created for the contest must be submitted by January 13th.
