Big Rapids, Mich. No. 14 Michigan Tech tied Ferris State 3-3 on Saturday at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Bulldogs earned the extra CCHA point with a 2-1 win in the third round.
“We got a big goal late by Crespi, but we just couldn’t hang on. It was disappointing,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. We had a lot of individual plays tonight where they competed and put us out of action.
Tech (16-7-4, 9-5-4 CCHA) never trailed in the game and led three to one. Logan Pietila broke the ice on the power play with his first chance of the weekend, 14:24. Nick Nardella faked a shot and dropped it to Pietila, who put in a hand for his sixth goal of the season. Cash Rasmussen assisted on Logan’s 27th career goal.
FSU (10-11-3, 7-7-2 CCHA) tied the game 8:43 into the second when it netted on a Connor McGrath goal. Tyler Schleppe and Mitch Delstra had assists in the game.
Logan Pietila scored his second goal at 14:18 to regain the lead. Ryland Mosley found Logan in the slot and got through the seventh during a quick shot on the ice. Brett Thorne added the second assist.
The Bulldogs tied it again at 5:45 of the third when Jason Brancheau scored from Blake Evennu and Stepan Pokorny.
Jake Crespi led the black and gold with 6:34 left when he shot the top shelf for his fourth straight goal of the season.
Ferris continued to fight and pulled the goalkeeper to find the extra striker. Jason Branchau won the match at 1:22.
Tech had two good chances in the final periods of regulation and then failed to capitalize on a 3-1 deficit in overtime.
Stepan Pokorny scored in the first round and Antonio Venuto won in the third. Logan Pietila scored for Tech in the second period, but attempts by Tristan Ashbrook and Nick Nardla were unsuccessful.
FSU led in shots 30-26. Blake Pattila made 27 saves and Logan Stone stopped 23 shots for the home team.
Tech was 1-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies return home to host Northern Michigan on Friday at MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The teams wrap up the weekend and season series at Marquette on Saturday. Sponsored by Holiday Inn Express, Friday’s game will give away 1,000 7th Man T-shirts.
