Even after two years of coronavirus concerns, many consumers are planning to travel over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

More than half of consumers are planning a vacation for at least one of the big holidays. Booking early will be crucial to get the best deals, especially in recent years, as travelers have faced increasingly expensive airfares, said travel site Hopper.

“Significant factors including jet fuel prices, fewer scheduled flights and two years of curbed holiday travel demand combined this year to allow Thanksgiving and Christmas flights to reach their highest level in 5 years,” Hopper reported.

US flight delays still far exceed pre-pandemic levels

The travel site broke down expected costs for Thanksgiving and Christmas trips, including hotels and car rentals. Here’s what you should expect to pay.

According to Hopper’s data, the cost of gratuities is down 9%. Average over $400 round trip in August. Hopper fares are expected to remain at current levels until mid-to-late October.

Airline tickets are falling from the summer peak, according to a report

Travelers typically plan to depart for at least a week during this period, meaning those staying between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve could end up with an average bill of up to $2,177.

“Typically, last-minute bookings get travelers the best deals on car rentals. But when rental car availability in the market is low and busy during the holiday season, waiting until the last minute means there are no vehicles left to book,” said Hopper.
