Walmart’s new 412,000-square-foot distribution center is breaking ground this month, and the facility will add 1,000 new jobs to the area, the company said.
Walmart said in a press release that it has hired 500 workers for the facility, with another 500 to be added.
Since the project was announced, the institution’s employment projections have increased significantly. Last fall, the company planned to add 600 jobs in conjunction with the new warehouse.
The site is located east of the small North Lebanon Township village of Heilmandale. The property has been used for industrial purposes since at least the mid-1970s.
The warehouse is owned by Transwestern Development Co. for Walmart.
A large berm was built along Helmandale Road in a deal with neighbors who were concerned that their views would be spoiled by the massive structure. A traffic light has been installed at the intersection of Route 72 and Hailmandale Road.

As you may have guessed from previous work on that list, this is not your typical warehouse. Spanning 17 football fields, the facility is only the second “high-tech conditioning center” to be completed by the Bentonville behemoth.
Consolidation centers receive goods from suppliers in “less than truckload” quantities and combine them into full truckloads and send them to regional distribution centers, after which the goods are divided and delivered to stores.
According to Walmart, suppliers can now consolidate goods into a single location instead of shipping separate orders to each of its 42 regional distribution centers, all of which will be serviced from the new Helmandale Road.
The first Walmart fulfillment center opened three years ago in Colton, California.
Walmart says the facilities and built-in automation make it easier to fulfill purchase orders, reduce lead times and increase speed for customers.
“We have continued to invest in our people, facilities and technology to ensure we have the right product in the right place at the right time,” said Mike Gray, senior vice president of supply chain operations at Walmart, in a press release. Release.
“As part of these investments, the Lebanon facility will provide greater opportunities for small to mid-sized suppliers that do not ship nationally, with the ability to supply product to all 4,700 Walmart stores.
The automated technology in the consolidation centers will soon be rolled out to all 42 regional distribution centers.
