This is the first in a series of insider looks at the products coming out of Pittsburgh that are changing the world.
To hear Mark Zuckerberg call it, metaphysics is taking over the world—and that means immersive experiences in every walk of life. But most of us think of Meta as wearing 3D glasses or projecting ourselves on a screen in some environment. Brad Factor thought bigger than that – he and his team at North Shore-based EctoVR created a pair of boots that would change the entire meta experience for work and play.
Putting on a pair of VR glasses will take you to a whole new world. That opens up a lot of possibilities for games and new ways of doing business, from video training to inspections.
But the same baptism that takes you out of the world is responsible. When your senses are cut off from your surroundings, you’re more likely to get hurt, for example, by running into a wall or knocking over a lamp. Wouldn’t it be nice not to worry about this? Wouldn’t it be great if you were always in the middle of the room – after walking 5 imaginary miles?
That’s exactly what the Ecto VR product Ecto One does. When paired with sensors on other parts of your body, these boots act like a mini Tesla, returning your feet to the center of the room, whether it’s running or walking for miles.
Put on your glasses; Put on your sensors (in this case on your knees and vest); Then strap these 12-pound boots on your feet and you’re ready. Artificial intelligence understands where you are, and sophisticated electronics and wheel mechanisms gently guide you to the center of the room.
Our tests included walking on a treadmill, adjusting controls and playing games in an oil refinery, walking down a hall and going down a short flight. In each case, it took only a moment to adapt; I felt like I was really moving.
No need for glasses to walk on a treadmill; It was like going on one at the gym or at my house. But with Ekto VR, the treadmill doesn’t take up a large part of the room; It’s on your feet. Move forward, it moves you backwards.
Using the VR goggles, I was able to use the boots to walk around the filter, find the valves that needed to be adjusted, and use the VR headset to open or close the valves to put me in a desert scene with a virtual oil filter. . I felt like walking the length of a football field when all the parts were put together; But I was still in the middle of the room when my glasses came off.
