Volkswagen to buy self-driving software and hardware from Israel’s Innoviz Technology for $4 billion The agreement signed by Volkswagen CARIAD Technologies Group with Innoviz will see the Volkswagen Group use laser-based lidar sensors for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles from the middle of the decade.

Innoviz CEO and Co-Founder Omer Kaylaf said in a statement that the group is excited to work with the CARIAD team and become a supplier of LiDAR sensors and cognitive software for vehicles starting mid-decade. “Carid is a leading player in transforming the entire automotive space. We are proud to be a part of their mission,” Khelaf was quoted as saying in the Casscopes report.

The Israeli technology company claims that its sophisticated LiDAR and cognitive software can see better as it reduces the chances of error compared to a human driver. He added that he also has a lidar agreement with BMW. Keilaf said the company is hiring a third-party contractor to manufacture the lidar sensors.

Volkswagen’s CARIAD has signed a series of technical partnerships, including Bosch, Qualcomm and STMicroelectronics. Volkswagen previously invested $2.6 billion in US startup Argo AI as part of the transfer of the auto major’s European self-driving unit to Argo. Volkswagen announced months ago that it will use Qualcomm chips for the autonomous vehicles it plans to develop.
