Hello Durango, long time listener, first time candidate. I am very excited to be running for City Council this year. What I enjoy more than running is being in the office and supporting our vision for Durango.
I have been fortunate enough to call this great place home since early 2005 and have built myself into this community. I have worked with PEAK Food & Beverage for the past 17 years, the last 10 of which were managing El Morro Spirits & Tavern. Understanding how to conduct business in Durango and the unique challenges it presents gives me perspective on the economic landscape of our community.
Additionally, working in the day-to-day operations of a business helped me contextualize the day-to-day challenges of our employees. Most of the time we talk only to create binary choices on the subject. I believe we can both be pro-business in Durango, and compassionate in understanding our workforce’s headwinds and how to address them. I believe I can apply that skill to Council by understanding both sides and the economic consequences of each.
Nothing is more valuable to me than hospitality. If you’ve ever been to where I work, you know that I always make you feel welcome. Not only by me, but by all who work there.
Creating and providing a positive workplace culture is a fundamental part of hospitality. The way we connect and listen to each other is not a groundbreaking idea, but instilling these values into our communities should be something we all strive for. Danny Meyer, author of “Setting the Table,” likens hospitality to two prepositions: “for” and “for.” You are doing something “for” or for someone. My principles of hospitality will not change just because I have moved myself into another sector.
I intend to do my best for my community through involvement, compassion and experience. If elected, I will strive to be a voice of reason, a supporter of the interests of our employees and their families, and the prosperity of our business community.
I appreciate all of you attending this election and voting, and I look forward to serving Durango to create a legacy we can all be proud of for decades to come.
