As has been the case for many designers at heritage houses this Paris Fashion Week, Matthew M. Describing Givenchy autumn/winter 2023 as “a new aesthetic”, the designer drew on the sophisticated and classic silhouettes of founder Hubert de Givenchy, but gave them a modern twist, balancing the new with the old. Williams aimed to capture the aesthetic that Hubert de Givenchy was best known for, but bring it to 2023 to create “a conversation between Parisian chic and American cool.” In doing so, the designer offered eveningwear informed by comfortable silhouettes – much of it long, floaty and relaxed – as well as layering pieces together in ways that would age on the street, creating formal outfits.

“From luxe baggy sweats, delicate jersey tops, cargos, jumpsuits, felpa dresses and kilts, layered expressions show a new understanding of beauty. Evening dresses, leather tailoring and some seriously beautiful dresses, all created with quality, and from the 1970s and 1980s at Givenchy Dresses were told.

Delving into the archives, Williams recreated the fish and floral prints that Hubert had drawn on chainmail evening dresses. “Along with the fish motif, the flower represents a study of imagery – random or symbolic – that reflects a modern perspective and resonates as a charm.

He also gave the label’s Voyou shoulder bag an update, downsizing for evening, renaming it the Party Voyou, while the larger styles come in shellac, cashmere, distressed leather, metallic leather and rugged. And, the famous shark bot is served by the cowboy.

There was a predictable A-list front row for Givenchy this season – the likes of Jared Leto, Halsey, Naomi Anderson, Madeleine Petsch, Lisa Rinna and Kathryn Newton were all in attendance.

A modern take on a traditional aesthetic was the name of the game for Williams this season. Part of this is the versatility and wearability of everything he designs – evening wear is comfortable, but casual pieces are elevated.
