Virginia Tech’s Ashley Owusu is out indefinitely with a broken pinky.

Virginia Tech senior guard Ashley Owusu — in her first season with the Hokies after transferring from Maryland — is out indefinitely after breaking her pinky on a shot Dec. 1 against Nebraska, coach Kenny Brooks told ESPN on Thursday. The program expects her to return midway through the ACC schedule.

Owusu — the state’s Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner for the nation’s best shooting guard — underwent surgery on the injury on Dec. 6.

After spending her first three seasons in college at Maryland, where she was a first-team All-Big Ten player, two-time Big Ten Tournament MVP and third-team Associated Press All-American, Owusu opted to join the Hokies last season. , comes in at No. 2 in the ESPN.com transfer rankings.

At the time of her injury, she was still trying to find a stick, averaging 10.4 points, 1.6 assists and 2.7 rebounds in seven starts with her new team.

“She was very unselfish — she never tried to go outside of what we were doing, she was just trying to figure it out,” Brooks Owusu said of his early days at Biskup. “She had some games where she was a little bit quiet because she was trying to figure it out and then you see — unfortunately for us — she started to figure it out right before she got hurt. I thought she was going to get on a roll and then she got hurt. But her attitude was so big … until we got her back. We can’t wait.

Fortunately for Brooks’ team, Owusu was able to bounce back despite missing the better part of four games. After defeating No. 31 Nebraska, the Hokies took down SEC seed Tennessee and beat Boston College by 15 to open ACC play.

Virginia Tech’s 10-0 start makes it one of the top eight teams in the AP poll.

Although Virginia Tech can count on ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Keightley and four other double-digit scorers, the Hokies’ schedule begins when they face No. 5 Notre Dame on Sunday. Then they play North Carolina and Louisville in the first two weeks of the new year.
