Winston-Salem, NC – After scoring a pair of home runs in the middle of Friday’s affair, Virginia Tech’s baseball team gave life to No. 1 Wake Forest, although it ultimately fell just short, 7-5, to David F. Couch Ballpark.


Despite Friday’s loss, Virginia Tech (29-21, 11-17 ACC) clinched its third consecutive ACC Baseball Championship berth with a 7-4 loss to Florida State in Louisville. The Hokies will learn their pool allocation and game schedule Saturday evening for next week’s conference tournament, this year at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina.

How did it happen?

Trailing 2-0, the Hokies put runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by Donai’s two-run homer.

The Demon Deacons were unable to push across any runs before the Hokies’ offense returned to scoring ways in the next inning. Virginia Tech scored twice on Hurley’s two-run homer, bringing the Hokies’ lead to 5-2. The Hokies were unable to hold onto the lead as Wake Forest scored five runs over the remaining four innings to capture a 7-5 victory.

» Virginia Tech’s top score was fourth, pushing in three runs.
» Virginia Tech pitchers faced 39 Wake Forest batters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and five fly balls while striking out eight.
» Hurley led the Hokies at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
» Wake Forest was led offensively by sophomore Tommy Hawk, who went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI.
» Senior Cole Roland led the charge for the Demon Deacons, throwing two scoreless innings.
