And just like that, we’re one week away from fall practices. The Hokies have 29 days to complete 25 practices leading up to the season opener at Old Dominion, and there’s plenty of work to be done.
What kind of positional battles are we looking at as we head into fall camp? Let’s start the offense.
Quarterback and Backup QB: Grant Wells vs. Jason Brown
The winner gets the starting job, the loser slides into an experienced backup role. Wells is a favorite after a strong spring season, and he certainly has higher and better long-term potential in Blackburgh. New head coach Brent Pr He wants to identify Wales as the man for the next 2-3 seasons as soon as possible.
However, the interception numbers are alarming. Wells threw 22 in two seasons while playing in C-USA at Marshall. If he can’t take care of the football, he won’t last long as a starter, even if he gets the first snap.
Wells came in with the lead, so a solid week or two could give this offensive coordinator a quick turnaround. Tyler Bowen A chance to officially build the offense from one quarterback.
Quarterback No. 3: Tahj Bullock vs. Devin Farrell
This is the same dark horse battle to watch as spring. Bullock has an extra year of experience over Farrell, but with Brown leaving after the 2022 season, both have a chance to slide from the top spots on the quarterback depth chart next spring.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t some resolution here, but these two are definitely jockeying for a potential first quarter of the future.
Running Number 2: Jalen Holston vs. Keshawn King vs. Brice Duke vs. Luck black vs. Kenji Christian
After being named the most complete tailback on the Prime roster in the spring, I’m comfortable saying that. Malachi Thomas It’s Tech’s top running back going into the fall. Questions remain about how many touchdowns there are for how many tailbacks in Bowen’s system, but at least it will be a competitive battle for the second spot.
Holston has experience as a 6th year senior. King is finally looking to put it all together, Duke, Black and Christian see their first action.
Wide receiver No. 3 – No. 5: Jalen Jones vs. Christian Moss vs. Stephen Gosnell vs. Dalan Wright vs. Tucker Holloway vs. Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw vs. Cole Beck
Like running back Caleb Smith with Thomas. Jadan blue, and Da’Wain Lofton will be primary pass rushers at wide receiver in some form. Add Connor Bloomrick Somewhat like a quasi WR/TE and maybe two secondary slots for players to grab some playing time.
Jones may be favored as he played last season, while Gosnell brings some experience from his time at North Carolina. Christian Moss And Dalan Wright Holloway and Turner-Bradshaw, who could enter the mix as true freshmen, can continue to focus.
Beck, a star on the Virginia Tech track team, is back on the gridiron to see if his speed can be a wide-ranging weapon.
Tight end No. 3: Ty Eller vs. Dequan Wright. vs. Benji Gosnell vs. Harrison St. Germain
Bloomrick could be considered a factor here as well, but I don’t expect him to stick his hand in the dirt as often as a traditional tight end, so I’ll leave it here. Eller is a former walk-on transfer and has played a good amount so far at Virginia Tech.
Wright, Gosnell and St. Germain, as true freshmen, are likely not yet ready to play major college football. That opens the door for Eller to be the only No. 3 available this season.
However, Wright, Gosnell, and St. Germain are the future of the position, and with Gallo and DeLuise both likely to leave after this season, drafting someone is important.
St. Germain and Gosnell have already signed up, and while Gosnell is working his way back from injury, they may have a leg up on Wright. However, Wright looks physically ready to go, so this will be an interesting battle to watch.
Backup Offensive Line: Multiple players
To me, besides the quarterback position, this is the position to watch this August. The Hokies need some depth and some future planning for this team.
The first five – LT Silas DzansiLG Jesse HansenC Johnny JordanArg Kaden Mooreand RT Parker Clements – They are very calm. The people behind them are completely unknown.
Expect to hear a lot about men Braylin Moore, Bob Schick, Xavier Chaplin, Will Jones, Brody Meadows, Johnny Dixon, Xavier ChaplinAnd so on.
I usually all rotate offensive linemen during their true freshman year, but this is definitely where at least one can get some playing time, and maybe even more if it’s the OL coach. Joe Rudolph He wants to get some players wet for next season.
