“Thessalonica, Greece.

Great history, great food, vibrant nightlife and exciting destinations to explore nearby, such as Chalkidiki and Mount Olympus.

“Estonia! Any Baltic really.

But Estonia is a very interesting place. It has one of the nicest airports I’ve ever seen, it’s super affordable, great public wifi so it’s easy to navigate, Tallinn is beautiful and clean, the beach is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious.

I really enjoyed our trip there and it’s a great base camp if you want to see expensive countries like Finland, Norway and Denmark. I have been lucky enough to travel a lot in my life and Estonia is one of the main ones.

“North Wales.

It has the Snowdon Mountains and many small steam railways.

Great cheese and walks.

“Canada.

Overall, since Canada is not a very common destination, I wouldn’t consider it a great place to travel, but it is certainly beautiful.

We have everything from coniferous forests, to prairies, to red creek fir forests, to tundra, to rock, to anything.

So maybe next time you won’t spend all your time in Toronto or Ottawa, but go somewhere unknown. Because that’s what Canada is all about.”

“Underrated: Almost any city in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam is fantastic, especially if you are into architecture and art. But it was so expensive and so crowded that I had no regrets based on my last trip from Utrecht to NL. Haarlem, Alkmaar, Amersfoort and Leiden are all beautiful without having to contend with stoned college students and Chinese tour groups with no sense of personal space.

The country is so small, it’s surprisingly easy to train to Amsterdam from the above locations. But definitely don’t skip Amsterdam.

“The Southern Highlands of Scotland.

Most tourists bypass the south of Scotland and head for the Highlands, so the Southern Uplands tend to be quieter and less touristy.

“Romania!

Cheap, great food, amazing landscape, amazing architecture. I really liked that country.

It is especially beautiful in autumn. It’s very gray and foggy and it completely fills the Gothic mentality, but in a very good way. It’s amazing if you want to explore abandoned places and landmarks.

Of course there’s Dracula’s Castle and the winding Transfagarasan mountain road too!”

“Slovenia.

It is a fairytale paradise full of castles and dragons and strange old fairy tales. The landscape is very beautiful. You can see the whole country in a short visit. The people are incredibly friendly.

And yet most Americans have never heard of it. Literally, “Wait, did you create that country?” i’ve got. I said I would go there because of my well-educated friend.

“The south of Chile, like Valdivia to Punta Arenas, looks like an enchanted forest out of a fantasy novel or a video game or something.

Chile is probably the most under-traveled destination on the planet. There is a saying in Chile that after God created the world, he put what was left in the corner and named it Chile.

“Bulgaria! Many people don’t realize that it is right over Greece, so the climate and food are somewhat similar.

I was there in the summer but I was reading an article that the best prices for European skiing are #1 and #2 points in Bulgaria. Cheap to stay, eat and drink, very safe.

“Bratislava!

Many people traveling in this part of Europe want to skip it and go straight to Vienna, Prague and/or Budapest (as I understand it, all three cities are beautiful), but I recommend staying there, for a day or two.

It’s not a big city, so two days would be more than enough to see most of what it has to offer (I saw a lot in one day when I traveled years ago) It’s really cheap and great, the old town is cozy, the food is great, and the view from Hrad is great. Also, nearby Devin Castle is a great few hours drive!”

“Poland!

I was surprised how beautiful the country was. We went on a road trip from Gdansk-Warsaw-Krakow-Auschwitz-Zakopane.

Each city had a very beautiful and unique history. The cities offer opportunities for people who come for culture, but also for those who want to party.

We ended up in the mountains with a beautiful hike to one of the mountain lakes. According to the rangers we spoke to there, the mountains have the most floral biodiversity per m2 of any mountain range in Europe.

If you come from a western country, the prices are very low, so we can stay in relatively nice apartments for a student budget. The only downside is that some of the public highways really suck. “
