Utah Valley fell to Utah Tech in the weekend rubber match, 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. The Trailblazers (12-31, 6-15) hit three home runs and scored five runs in the first two innings to pull away from Utah Valley (23-20, 9-10).
“Our guys played hard today. Tip your hat to Utah Tech for making a few more pitches, a few more swings and a few more plays,” UVU head coach Eddie Smith said.
Daniel Dickinson went 2-for-5 in the first to extend his lead to 30 games. His first-inning shot gave UVU a 1-0 lead and was his fifth homer of the season.
But the Trailblazers roared ahead in the next three innings, scoring six runs.
The Wolverines looked to mount a comeback in the fifth inning when Kalin Halvorson doubled over the center field wall, and Garrett Broussard singled to put runners on the corners. Dickinson brought home a single to left to make it 6-2. UVU stranded a pair of runners in the inning.
Casey Anderson (2-1) got the start and took the loss for the Wolverines. He struck out six batters in 3.2 innings. He gave way to former Utah Tech reliever Ethan Foulkes, who came in to go two innings, including one strikeout.
Mitch Mueller made a brief appearance, going 0.1 innings and recording a strikeout, and Nick Sims pitched the game in 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.
Wolaita Dachas are back at home in seven games. UVU opens with a three-game homestand against Stephen F. Austin on Friday, May 5, before welcoming New Mexico State to Orm in May. 12 for the final meeting before the Aggies move to Conference USA. Utah will visit in May. 16 to wrap up the home schedule.

Wolverine softball can’t keep up with No. 10 Washington.
Utah Valley fell to the No. 10 Washington Huskies 9-1 on Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle.
Jaden Barajas and Riley Thorpe each went 1-for-3 for the Wolverines. Megan Gibbs brought home the only Wolverine run with a bases loaded walk in the third.
UW scored in all five innings, but Utah Valley was able to hold the Huskies to just three extra base hits on the afternoon.
Utah Valley loaded the bases with two outs in the third to bring home their only run. Barajas and Thorpe hit back-to-back singles to left, then Shepherd reached on an error by the second baseman. Gibbs drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Barajas, then Angelique Mann grounded out to third.
UW clinched the run-rule victory with a homer in the bottom of the fifth.
They will head south on I-15 to St. George this coming weekend to take on the WAC-leading Utah Tech Trail Blazers in the Old Hammer Rivalry. Due to the ongoing graduation festivities around the Utah Tech campus, the schedule has changed from what was announced before the season. It will be game one on Friday at 12 pm MDT, with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 pm MDT. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
UVU track broke three more school records
Utah Valley University finished with three school records falling at the Idaho State Bengals Invitational over the weekend. All the records were broken on Friday, while Saturday saw several personal records and top 10 performances in the school record books. Noah Peterson set a new high in the pole vault with a height of 5.16m, while Everlyn Kemboi and Joel Mendez set new 1,500m records on Friday.
After adjusting for altitude, Cumboy’s winning time of 4:12.71 leads the WAC, which ranks 19th in the nation and eighth in the West. Mendez’s record of 3:45.95 ranks fourth in the WAC this year.
Kelsey Oldroyd, who broke her own school long jump record last week, cleared 5.88 meters on Saturday with Paige Young (5.71) third and Krista Farley (5.63) fourth. Maggie Zwahlen took first in Friday’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:55:38. In the men’s 5,000, Mendez took second with a time of 14:22.41 that placed 8 in UVU’s top 10, while the women’s 4×100 team of Farley, Amy Ballard, Anna Johnson and Quincy Bond placed 10th. The program records books in 46.36 seconds.
