The fashion scene in Miami is truly one of a kind, from breezy day looks to designer nightclub outfits. Adapting to the lifestyle of a new city can be challenging. But not all clothes have to be a statement, often a student’s wardrobe is made up of something clean and practical.
Whether your personal style is Vera Wang or off-brand Crocs, these are must-haves for everyone in Miami.
Athlete
One thing you should know about living in Miami is that it’s hot.
The heat is unavoidable, but it is better to wear dry light clothes, otherwise known as athletics instead of sweaters and pants.
Sophomore Ashley Coxon swears by athletic wear, especially when walking around UM in the South Florida humidity.
“Bicycle shorts, tank tops and sneakers were my holy grails last semester,” Cohon said. “For someone who has to walk across campus to get from one room to another, exercise makes me feel cool and comfortable.”

Sunglasses
With the sweltering Miami heat, comes the brightest sun.
Most UM students agree that sunglasses are a must-have in Miami, including sophomore Chase Cohen, who can’t leave his apartment without his favorite pair.
“If I don’t have my sunglasses on, I’m knocking them everywhere I go,” Cohen said. “They are very important here in Miami.”
Flip-flops and bathing suits
Whether it’s after a hard day of school or a lazy Sunday, the campus pool is the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Every day, students can be found hanging out by the campus pool to cool off and take a break from their classrooms, so be sure to bring a bathing suit and flip flops.
“Going to school in Miami is the best because when I’m tired, I can lie by the pool and enjoy the sun instead of going inside for a while,” junior Ali Joseph said. “Bathing suits and flip flops are a must for UM students.”
Raincoat and umbrella
Although it is considered the Sunshine State, the sunny skies of South Florida can turn dark to severe thunderstorms in a matter of minutes.
Sophomore Ethan DePalma says a waterproof raincoat and sturdy umbrella have saved him many times from sitting in the back of his classroom getting wet in a South Florida afternoon downpour.
“At UM, when it rains, it pours,” DePalma said. “Even if I don’t pack my raincoat, I always keep my umbrella in my bag.”
Jeans and good clothes
The city of Miami is known for its art, food and fashion. Whether it’s at a pop-up art exhibit, on the Bayshore waterfront or at a Michelin-starred restaurant, UM students express themselves around town with their fun and unique costumes.
Sophomore Allie Kirsch said she always looks forward to exploring the city with her friends in fashionable clothes on the weekends.
“Whether it’s a downtown restaurant or a concert, I definitely recommend bringing good clothes that will age. ” Kirsch said.
Make sure you pack your fashion essentials when you’re moving down to Miami.
