On April 1StIn 2021, the Mexican government implemented a tourist tax for international visitors to the state of Quintana Roo. Some of the most popular destinations in Mexico are located in Quintana Roo, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel. As a result, most tourists entering Mexico are subject to a tax on all tourists over four. Although the tax has been around for over a year, many are unaware of its existence.
How much is the tourism tax?
The total cost per visitor is $241 Mexican pesos or approximately $12 US dollars. In this article. The fee is applicable for more than four passengers visiting any part of the Quintana Roo territory. Travelers can use the Mexican government’s VISITAX website before or during their trip to pay the fee. The tax is used to raise funds for the development of the tourism industry, and it is estimated that the tax will generate $29.1 million in 2021. However, many tourists are unaware of the tax, making the collection unpredictable.
Do you have to pay the tax?
A Quintana Roo tourism tax is mandatory for more than four passengers. So, if you’re reading this, you probably have to pay the tax. However, the information about the tax is quite limited, and even after a year of its existence, many travelers have missed it. It can be difficult to find information about the tourism tax beyond the payment website. Some travelers have reported traveling to and from Cancun without being asked for proof of tax payment, which has led others to ignore it. However, the tax is still mandatory, and travelers may still be asked to provide proof of payment.
A word of caution
There is only one official site that travelers should use when paying the tourism tax. To be clear, the entire site URL string is https://www.visitax.gob.mx. Any other site users may find through search engines or other means is not the official portal to pay the tourism tax. Many sites have sprung up after tax introduction trying to take advantage of travelers planning to visit Quintana Roo.
Since we don’t want to bore you with links to these sites out of the way, we’ve included screenshots of the prices some of these sites charge for tourism tax. As you can see, some sites are charging up to $42 for $12 in tax. Chances are, you’re taking your information, paying the taxes, sending the confirmation, and pocketing the difference. However, since none of these sites are official ways to pay the tourist tax, it is unknown whether they will pay the tax on your behalf.
Latest updates
When this tax was first introduced, it had no system to support its enforcement. Therefore, many travelers have gone to Quintana Roo without paying or being asked. However, Mexico is gradually adding more infrastructure to the system. Recently, Cancun International Airport introduced VISITAX payment modules in Arrivals Terminals 2 and 4.

Until recently, the only way to pay the tax was by using the online form. However, travelers can now pay in person at Cancun International Airport. The government seems to be trying to make the tax more transparent and stricter enforcement may soon follow.
Information needed to pay the tax
To pay the tax, travelers must fill out the online form or use one of the modules available in person at the Cancun International Airport. The form asks for the following
- Number of people in your party
- First and last names of all party members
- Birthday of each party member
- Passport numbers for all party members
- Day of departure from Quintana Roo
Proof of payment will be provided and, if applicable, must be presented to airport security prior to departure. As more destinations continue to increase tourist taxes, travelers may see them as the new normal. Thankfully, this particular tax is currently low. And even though many travelers get tax-free from the entrance, it is still mandatory.
