Travel nurse Nicole Lorraine Linton, 37, of Windsor Hills, Calif., is accused of speeding a red light and killing six people, including a baby, a pregnant woman and her unborn child, on Thursday.
Investigators believe Linton crashed her Mercedes-Benz at the intersection of La Brea and Slawson roads going over 100 mph. The speed limit in that area is only 35 mph. Surveillance video shows Linton’s vehicle running a red light, slamming into cars at the intersection, then bursting into flames and coming to rest against a light pole.
Authorities took eight people, including the driver, to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Six of them were minors and one was seriously injured. 23-year-old pregnant Ashray Ryan of Los Angeles was in the car with her boyfriend and baby. All lives were lost in the fire. Another victim was found burned inside a car and has not yet been identified.

Onlookers were rushing to help those who were thrown from their vehicles after the accident. Veronica Esquival told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that a baby came to rest at the intersection. “One of the workers came and saw me holding the baby and took the baby from my hand. “Someone tried to wake the baby, but the baby was gone,” she said.

The final decision on charges is made by the District Attorney’s Office. District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement Friday that his office will “work with law enforcement over the weekend” and that the investigation could be presented to his office “as early as Monday” considering the charges. According to authorities, Linton survived the horrific crash and was charged with vehicular homicide by gross negligence. She is said to be cooperating with the police. It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

“A preliminary investigation indicates that Nicole Lorraine Linton was driving a dark colored Mercedes traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on La Brea Street,” according to a CHP statement.
“While driving a Mercedes, Linton ran a red light and collided with multiple vehicles traveling eastbound and westbound on Slawson Avenue. The collision resulted in multiple body parts and two vehicles were fully engulfed in flames. Following the collision, he was involved. Linton is a travel nurse from Texas working in the intensive care unit at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center. Kaiser Permanente issued a statement Friday, saying, “Everyone at Kaiser Permanente is deeply saddened by Thursday’s tragic accident. The pain of those involved cannot be imagined. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy. At this time, we are unable to comment on what is being reported as a criminal investigation.”
According to officials, Linton survived the horrific crash and was booked with gross negligence for vehicular homicide when he was hospitalized.
