With a combined website and magazine circulation of more than 16 million, Travel + Leisure is at the forefront of influencing tourism trends, and readers can now be persuaded to take day trips to a dozen select municipalities in the Garden State.
The publication named the 12 best small towns in New Jersey for 2022, which are spread across eight of the state’s 21 counties.
Travel + Leisure doesn’t define what constitutes a “small” city, and both Bay Hill (under 1,000 people) and Montclair (over 40,000) made the list.
The unrated group includes all five major New Jersey municipal governments: county, city, town, city and village.

Beautiful sunflower fields to visit in NJ 2022
Among the reasons why the “Garden State” remains a fitting nickname for New Jersey – the end of summer means the arrival of sunflower season.
There are at least six fields covering the state. Some bloom in early August, while others are scheduled to peak from late August to late September.
