Long queues, delayed/cancelled flights and hundreds of thousands of bags reported missing. With more than 220,000 bags being mishandled in the US, travelers have decided to post advice on social media platforms to avoid losing luggage. The top tip from users is to avoid checking bags. But if they have to check baggage, take a direct flight.
However, many Americans don’t live near an international airport—they often have to take connecting flights. But how much are they willing to travel and spend so they don’t lose their luggage? How many miles are they going to their nearest international airport for that direct flight, and how much are they willing to spend on a connecting flight?
We asked American travelers from across the country to find out.
Plans have changed
For the first time, we asked Americans how the recent baggage crisis has changed their travel plans. The majority of respondents (60.1%) take carry-on bags instead of checking their bags. Whether it’s a direct flight or a connecting flight, taking a carry-on bag is a foolproof way to avoid losing your luggage. Take it with you throughout your travels, store it in the overhead compartment of your flight, and keep it in your sights at all times. A quarter of respondents (25.8%) now fly directly on a connecting flight, while 5.5% of travelers now travel to the nearest airport that offers a direct flight to their destination. Travelers on direct flights have the luxury of checking their bags in, avoiding the risk of transfers on connecting flights. The remaining 8.6% canceled/delayed their travel plans, never flew before or now drive to their destination.

In August 2022, we surveyed 1,000 Americans from every state, including the District of Columbia. We used responses to calculate averages, percentages, and many other things.
We looked at the current average gas price ($3.949) and the average mileage for a mid-size car in the country (24 mpg) to find the average gas price commuters would spend during a 168-mile drive. Using this gas usage and cost calculator, a mid-size car’s fuel usage for a 168 mile trip would cost $26.06 at a gas price of $3.949 per gallon.
To find out the average cost of luggage insurance as an option for our travelers, we looked at how much travel insurance costs – typically 4-8% of the total cost of the trip. The average US vacation for one week in the US and costs $1,558 per person. We applied the average travel insurance premium (6%) to the average one-week vacation cost – for an average luggage insurance cost of $93.
