Summer can quickly turn into fall, but that doesn’t mean travel is over. Whether you’re looking for a last-ditch summer getaway or a way to usher in fall, here are 8 of the best places to visit across the United States in the second half of 2022.
1. The Florida Keys
It’s a great choice if you want to enjoy as much sun and summer vibes as possible. The Florida Keys offer countless things to do, from exploring the shops on Key West to hiking in Grassy Key. The end of summer can offer slightly cooler temperatures, making it ideal for those who want to participate in outdoor activities.
2. Joshua Tree National Park
While many national parks like Yosemite and Yellowstone are very popular to visit in the summer (they also experience closures in the winter), the cooler parts of the year are actually the most popular time to visit Joshua Tree National Park. Planning a late summer trip here is a great way to enjoy the best of both worlds – while the cooler temperatures are still few and far between. Visitors can look forward to activities like camping, hiking and wildlife viewing.
3. San Diego, California
San Diego, California is a beautiful city known for its pleasant weather year-round. Late summer can be a great time to visit as the summer crowds begin to thin out, but temperatures are still warm enough to explore Balboa Park or relax on the beach.
4. Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix, Arizona is a beautiful desert city, and a great place to visit when the summer weather cools off. The area surrounding the city is full of wonderful places to enjoy the outdoors, including Gambleback Mountain, and the city itself offers plenty to do for all types of visitors, including the Arizona Science Center.
5. New York City
New York City is one of America’s most famous cities, and for good reason. From exploring famous landmarks like Times Square to lesser known things like the Dream House, there are truly countless things to do in NYC.
6. Marfa, Texas
Nheshto Hatema Nhetema Khetka. Marfa’s location in Texas means you can enjoy warm weather during late summer visits. This small town is known for a variety of local landmarks, including UFO lights in the night sky and a fake Prada store. It’s also about an hour away from remote Big Bend National Park, which can make for a fun (and lonely) day trip.
7. Maui, Hawaii
Maui is one of the most beautiful Hawaiian Islands. A great place to visit any time of year, Maui boasts pleasant weather year-round, making it an especially great escape when the hot summer weather starts to cool down in the fall. If you want to extend your fun in the sun, you can explore beautiful beaches, tropical forests and even unique activities such as submarine rides and whale watching.
8. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole, Wyoming is probably best known as a ski town, but a late summer trip can be amazing too. In town, you can look forward to exploring local shops, dining on fine dining, and learning more about local history at (museums).
