Three years away from home, Tommy Hilfiger returns to New York Fashion Week Fall 2022 with an immersive and interactive ready-to-wear show that serves as a reminder that this is not the Tommy Hilfiger of old. This is Tommy designing for tomorrow.

Not having to shelter under an umbrella from the New York summer rains, including Shawn Mendes, Kourtney Kardashian and husband Travis Barker, Kate Moss and Kodak Black, may cool the furore surrounding the iconic prodigal. The boy’s show.

Named Tommy Factory, in honor of the great New York artist Andy Warhol and a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to art, fashion and culture, the physical exhibition became an experiment at the crossroads of the future and the present, digital and physical, the runway and the real world. Guest-generated AR balloons lit up the runway skyline as “different creatives interacted with IRL guests.”

But all this was just the backdrop for a clothing collection that marked a new era for the brand.

Ivy League Prep and Urban Americana – Hilfiger has managed to adapt its brand to move up the American fashion divide like no other. For Fall 2022, the 71-year-old designer will be the axis through which he tells the story of a way of dressing – where leisure and luxury are not separated from the norm.

There’s a joke that fashion is timeless and style is timeless, but Hilfiger manages to bring both into one stitch. Just as it bridges the gap between the youth audience and the more upscale version of what’s made the garment a streetwear staple.

Tailoring made its way back into the collection, simply paired with casual codes that marked the brand’s most recent decade. While it may be a while before we see track pants with a tie in the office, I’m looking forward to it.

The classics have been tweaked – rugby shirts are longer, puffer jackets are bigger and cardigans are oversized to accentuate the slouchy effect. Colors remain bold, from college life – heritage green, burgundy, yellow and bright cobalt blue.

Woven into everything from knitwear to activewear was the new Tommy Hilfiger TM monogram, created in collaboration with illustrator and graphic designer Fergus Purcell.

This is the second release in as many weeks for Hilfiger. Only a few days ago, the designer revealed a new collection in collaboration with Richard Quinn. The graphic collection also featured the new monogram embroidered with an English rose and check motif. The collaboration, a cool set that looks like a Tik Tok revamp of Carnaby Street back in the 60s, makes a guest appearance at the end of the show.
