An annual tradition in Hawaii is to walk the path to the Makapuu Lighthouse on Oahu to see the sun rise on the first day of the year. It has returned this year for the first time since the outbreak began.

While hiking the islands can be muddy, wet and emotional at times, the results, as was evident on that first day out, are also restorative, refreshing and meditative. Combine that with another aspect of Hawaii, and it’s no wonder hiking is on most visitors’ itineraries.

“It’s the best hike in the country, the air is so clean and beautiful,” Maui resident Oprah Winfrey said in an Instagram post last week. She has highlighted her hiking adventures in Hawaii in a series of videos. “We’re looking to improve our health by 2023 … and the health status of the state of Hawaii,” she said.

Exercising is even more fun when a common resolution at the beginning of each year involves hiking in Hawaii. But when making your own plans or recommending hikes to clients, be sure to choose a hike that matches your fitness level and sometimes do some research beforehand.

I recommend checking out the state of Hawaii approved trails listed on the Na Ala Hale State website. These are regularly maintained by the state, and therefore, offer a safe option for visitors. More can be found on the State Parks Division website. And Haleakala National Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park each offer their own list of hikes.

Follow these simple rules during your hike: stay on the trail, walk with a partner, monitor the weather, watch the time, and wear appropriate clothing. (Yes, ditch the flip-flops for hiking boots.) Bring plenty of water, a cell phone, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and food. The Hawaii Tourism Authority also added that hikers should not enter streams or ponds, especially on open roads.

Planning ahead while improving your health in 2023 will give you the peace of mind you need to have a great time down the road.
