Checking a bag (or two or three) is sometimes an inevitable part of travel. And if you’re traveling with extra luggage, you drop your luggage at the airport entrance, pay any necessary baggage fees, put your information on those little luggage tags, and hope for the best.
That said, dealing with lost or damaged luggage is one of the most stressful travel experiences. But this doesn’t have to be your reality. What if you could do something to prevent your valuables from being mishandled or damaged while on the road?
Your checked luggage should have multiple wheels, says ramp agent Rachel
Ramp agent Rachel Bacha, who posts videos to her TikTok account rachel.bacha, shares some tips in this video. For starters, travel with checked luggage that has four wheels instead of two.
In her video series on TikTok, “Everything You Need to Know About Baggage from a Baggage Handler,” Rachel shared a top travel tip for checking bags.
Anytime you shop for luggage, get a bag with four wheels for a variety of reasons.
TikToker shares tips for checked luggage
This baggage handler on Tik Tok recently showed in one of her videos the types of luggage that can be thrown and misplaced by baggage handlers. Since she’s a professional, you might want to see what she has to say so that the luggage on your next trip doesn’t suffer the same fate as others.
The reason, she says, is that more wheels make it easier to load luggage, which makes it easier for people who often have to load and time-crunched luggage.
“There are people on the plane who will check your bags and some planes have very long overhead bins, and some airports don’t have a machine that takes the bag to you,” Rachel explained. Video.
A large plane can handle a lot of baggage.
Rachel explained that some of the cabins were so large that it was difficult for the two baggage handlers on duty to move the passengers’ luggage.
“So there are two people, one dropping the bags and one sorting the bags (in the airport).”
She continued, “I hesitate to use the word ‘throw,’ but that’s it, we throw bags. Some of these planes have tanks that are 20 feet long. Your bag should start here (in front of the handle) and go all the way back there… and the way it gets there is by rolling, sliding, or throwing.

From her experience, Rachel says that two-wheeled bags are going to be thrown away, alternatively, a four-wheeled bag is going to be flipped. This means that wheeled luggage is less likely to leave that aircraft hold with any signs of damage.
Despite the handling guidelines of airlines and baggage companies, getting the bag onto the plane is a different story in practice, and some inspectors may apply some pressure to get that bag inside. “That makes some people very unhappy, but that’s how it is,” Rachel said on the subject.
“Now you can be ready. How do you expect your bag to get from one destination to another in the time you’re working?” she added.
At the end of the day, it’s best to travel with luggage that’s easy to get from point A to point B, whether it’s for the baggage handler or yourself as an individual passenger. Any little thing you can do to make the overall travel experience as hassle-free and easy as possible is always a safe bet.
