Nacho Vigalondo’s low budget Time crimes (2007) is an old time travel story without the usual flashy visual effects and ambitious production. There are no explanations for the sudden appearance of the time machine or grand theories about its philosophical implications. Glancing On A Lazy Afternoon is the story of an ordinary middle-aged man who makes several attempts to correct his mistake in timing.
The harm is personal, and the abuser becomes increasingly deliberate – with no way out of this causal mess in sight. Unusually clever and occasionally thrilling, this Spanish thriller manages to tackle themes of survival and inevitability with a simple set-up and execution.

What are time crimes about?
A seemingly mundane opening scene shows a few shopping bags falling from the boot of a moving car. Hector, the driver, parked outside the house and got out to fetch them. This sets the tone for the film, where he is seen relentlessly following the misfits as they go after them.
The actual story begins (before Christmas and again) with a girl. Hector sleeps with his piano in the garden while his wife Clara goes to run for work. He saw a young woman undressing in the woods behind the property and moments later saw her still lying on the ground. He is immediately (and understandably) curious, and goes to investigate. When he gets close, he suddenly stabs him in the arm with a thin pair. He found himself face to face with a mysterious man with his head wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage.
As Hector runs to a nearby research facility, he communicates his problem to a scientist on a walkie-talkie. The scientist leads him to the place and convinces him to hide in a large liquid-filled contraption to hide from the oncoming killer. As Hector steps outside, he discovers that he was sent back an hour ago. The scientist explains that Hector 2 must remain low until Hector 1 goes to the time machine, where he can cease to exist and Hector 2 can resume his life. Otherwise, the scientist warns, Hector 2’s intervention could disrupt the space-time continuum and cause unexpected consequences.
Hector 2 instead takes off in the man’s car to go home and is hit by a truck on the road. As he wipes his bloody face, in an unexpected twist, he realizes that he himself is a bandaged assailant. The girl who had seen the accident earlier came to his aid. Realizing that he needs to reproduce the events as they happened to lure Hector 1 into the time machine, Hector 2 forces the girl to dress in the forest. As she tries to escape, he accidentally knocks her over and puts her body in Hector 1’s line of sight.
The events unfold as before, with Hector 2 revealing his former self with the girl’s scissors and Hector 1 running into the lab. When Hector 2 finds out that the girl has escaped, he follows her home. He catches her on the roof, and she falls to the ground and breaks her neck. When he sees the body, he believes he accidentally killed his wife Clara instead.
Hector 2 rushes to the lab and after Hector 1 enters the tank, he asks the scientist to let him into the time machine so he can prevent Clara from dying. The scientist reveals that Hector 3 has already spoken to him, telling Hector 2 to stop him from revisiting the past. Desperate, Hector 2 says he wants to go back anyway.
How do time crimes end?
When Hector 3 exits the time machine, the sequence of events will not be disrupted in any way. He drives the car that hit the Hector 2 car. That’s only because the scientist on the walkie-talkie was told earlier (or later?) that Hector 2 wouldn’t go back. He meets the girl as she runs away from Hector 2 and tells her that he is also hiding from the same man. They go home and find Clara alone, who says she called the police because she saw a bandaged man and there was someone in their house.
Hector 3 locks Clara in a shed and puts her coat on the girl. He cuts her hair and tells her to pretend to be Clara, hide in an upstairs closet – so Hector 2 scares her to death by mistake. The film ends with him and Clara sitting in the garden moments before he learns that they will be visited by the police.
On the first page, the film seems to depict the consequences of adultery; This shows a great effort to hide the loyalty. When Hector looks out into the forest again at the climax, the audience is reminded of where even minor transgressions can lead. That theme is expressed in the concept of time travel: a deviation in the timeline can lead to something bigger.
Vigalondo explained that the concept of the film is that “you only have free will within the limits of your perspective.” This shows a picture of Schrödinger’s cat on the murdered girl’s shirt. Based on what Hector sees, she is dead and alive at the same time. Believing he witnessed her murder, he becomes a murderer himself. Stuck in a loop, he doesn’t seem to have much free will to change reality completely, and takes the opportunity to sacrifice an innocent girl to save his wife.
Are time crimes going to happen again?
It has been reported that United Artists have taken over the rights to reproduce it Time crimes, and Tim Sexton is said to have written several early drafts. Later, however, it was announced that the project had been transferred to DreamWorks, and screenwriter Steven Zalian, best known for Schindler’s List And The girl with the dragon tattoo, will lead the project. However, there is no news about any development in recent years.
