The ‘world’s best’ streets for 2022

(CNN) — When it comes to fashion, street style has as much cachet as runway style — in fact, there are dozens of blogs and Instagram accounts dedicated to chronicling the best streetwear looks.

This is because urban chic has always started on the street, where people from all classes and backgrounds converge to work, school, home and entertainment.

This year, Time Out — the media and hospitality brand that publishes local guides to some of the world’s most exciting cities — released its second annual World’s Best Streets.

More than a neighborhood, a street can define a city’s culture.

“In much of the world, life has returned to pre-pandemic life in a shocking way. People are happily planning and getting out and about again in their own cities and on city breaks,” Time Out travel editor James Manning said in a statement. “Our list of the world’s coolest streets captures the key streets that locals — including our expert editors and contributors — recommend strolling down right now.”

This year’s list has 33 streets, three more than the first round in 2021. It includes several new cities including Taipei, Mumbai, Athens and Accra.

North America

MacDougall Street in New York's Greenwich Village is number 29 on the list.

This year’s top of the list is Rue Wellington in Montreal’s Verdun neighborhood.

According to Laura Osborne, Time’s Canada editor, the street has “killer cocktail bars, stellar brunch spots, some of the best sandwiches in town and a sandy city beach,” plus it’s becoming pedestrian-only by 2023, which will no doubt add even more cool. Points.

While the United States didn’t come out on top, you can rest assured knowing that America has the biggest streets on the list – Miami’s Calle Ocho, New York City’s MacDougal Street (home of perennial favorite cocktail bar Dante) and Chicago’s Wentworth. Avenue all cut out.

On the list is Mexico’s representative Avenida Amsterdam in Mexico City’s hip Condesa neighborhood.

Asia and the Pacific

Karangahape Road -- what the locals call it. "K-way" -- ranked 6th in Oakland.

Five of the top 10 routes are in this region.

Melbourne, Australia topped the 2021 list on Smith Street, but fell to second place this year. The city’s Gertrude Street made the list, described by Time’s Australian Eliza Campbell as “pretty, unpretentious and lacking the nightlife of its relatively raucous siblings”.

Coming in seventh is Tai Ping Shan, a neighborhood-within-a-neighborhood on Hong Kong’s main island.

The best things about living there are the dog-friendly cafes and the “mix of old and new,” according to CNN digital producer Rhea Mogul, who lives down the street. Tai Ping means “peace and tranquility” in Cantonese and Shan means “hill”.

A top debut for 2022 is Taipei’s Yongkang Street, home to favorite brewers Zhang Men Brewing.

Huang Shih Fang, director of the Taiwan Tourism Board’s International Affairs Department, told CNN: “We have combined various resources to promote this neighborhood to international tourists, and we are very happy that it has been registered.” We hope to bring tourists to the area once the border opens.

Europe

Headquartered in London, Time Out seems to be closer to home for some of its picks this year. The British capital’s best street in 2022 is Deptford High Street, a mix of street stalls, markets, shops, bars and more, Time Out editor Chris Weiwell says, not only is it London’s best street but it’s also “very lively”.

To the north, Glasgow’s Great Western Road is the UK’s highest entrance, at number three.

And the Danish metropolis of Copenhagen — which CNN Travel crowned “Europe’s Newest Cool Capital” last year — ranked fifth. Due to its wine and cheese shops and abundance of fresh flowers, Vernedamsvej street has been dubbed “mini Paris” by Time Out editors. That has to hurt Paris that he didn’t exactly make the list.

Other European streets that will get a shout on the 2022 list are Kolokotroni in Athens, Calle Echegaray in Madrid and Keppel Street in Dublin.

Of the last three, Dublin-based travel writer Nicola Brady says Capel — which rhymes with “maple” — “looks like a real slice of old Dublin.”

She added that the street, which became pedestrianized earlier this year, has “small hardware stores and bars that have been around for decades, along with great Korean and Vietnamese restaurants that are new to the scene.”
