The Chicago White Sox played a doubleheader against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. The first game was a rainout makeup on May 11. When South arrived, they were looking to bounce back from a devastating loss in the first game of a four-game set. They fell 8-2 against the Rangers on Friday.
Game 1
Johnny Cueto won his first second-half start of the afternoon. Cueto once again proved as reliable as he has been all year. In the year He announced his 10th quality start in 12 games in 2022. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk, and unfortunately, no strikeouts. He needed just 93 pitches to get through seven innings. The only blemish on the day came in the fifth inning when he was tagged for all four runs.
Cueto put the first two runners on when he walked Nolan Jones and threw out Austin Hedges. Steven Kwan doubled to left field to score Jones. Ash plated two runs in the following at-bat when Rosario singled to right. He reached third after a throwing error from Gavin Sheets. Jose Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to give Cleveland a 4-1 lead.
Sox Fight Back
The White Sox came back to tie it with three runs in the seventh. Luri Garcia hit a fielder’s choice with two outs and came home on a double by Josh Harrison. Yoan Moncada followed with one Double to deep left to score Harrison. Andrew Vaughn’s base hit in the next at-bat scored Moncada.
The Pale Hose had a chance to open the game with a loaded pitch but Gavin Sheets came out swinging.
He was not imprisoned for long. Things quickly came unglued for Lym Hendricks in the top of the ninth. Nolan Jones doubled to right field. Josh Naylor pinch hit for Hedges and wasted no time driving in the go-ahead run. Alex Call drove in a run for Naylor and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mallells Straw. Steven Kwan singled to left center to score the call and advanced to third on Rosario’s base. Jose Ramirez again drove in a run from third and drove in a sacrifice fly to split the save with three. The Sox quickly went 1-2-3 to end the game.
Game 2
The Sox look to split the doubleheader and avoid their third straight loss. Lance Lynn shaped like the 2021 version of himself, getting support from an RBI pair by Yoan Moncada and a solo homer from Eloy Jimenez.
Lynn threw six strong innings, allowing just three hits and one walk. After striking out six batters and needing just 87 pitches, Lynn’s night was over and the Sox bullpen took a 3-0 lead thanks to a third-inning bases-loaded walk by Yoan Moncada and Tim Anderson’s double in the fifth for the second run. Eloy Jimenez hit his second homer since returning from the injured list to give the White Sox insurance in the sixth.
The bullpen had another rough game. After Andres Jimenez reached on an infield single and advanced on Ruiz’s wild pitch, Jose Ruiz put the runner on second. Ernie Clement singled to score Gimenez. Miles Straw tripled to Clement and scored on Steven Kwan’s single. Amed Rosario hit a triple in the second to score Quan and put the Rangers ahead 4-3.
The White Sox steal one
The Pale Hos loaded the bases in the eighth after Vaughn doubled and Abreu and Grandle drew walks against Brian Shaw.
AJ Polk singled to deep left, scoring Abreu and Vaughn to take the lead back to 5-4. Matt Foster led off the ninth-inning with a walk and proved to be the final score.
Notes
Yasmani Grandel collected three hits in his second game back from the injured list.
The White Sox signed Noah Schultz, their first round draft pick (26th overall), to a minor league contract with a $2.8 million signing bonus.
What to tap next?
The Chicago White Sox will look to split the four-game series in Sunday’s finals. Dylan Chase pitches for the Sox, along with Cleveland relievers ace Shane Bieber, two of the best pitchers in the league. The shortstop, who is 5-1 with a 0.65 ERA in his last seven starts, will look to continue his breakout season. NBC Sports Chicago will have the game at 1:10 PM CT and the Sox On Tap postgame show.
