Along with the harsh weather this winter, the Wyoming Highway Patrol has been forced to close the interstate several times this year.
During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Beat program, WHP Lt. Eric Jorgensen explained that if the road is closed, it’s not about visibility, it’s about road conditions.
When the interstate between Sheridan and Buffalo is closed, many locals use US Highway 87, unfortunately, many visitors pass through the area thinking it’s a direct route, the lieutenant explained.
At best, those cases are the recovery of stranded and stranded motorists, requiring resources, time and risk to troop on road conditions that are already considered unfit for travel.
Jorgenson said there is a program that allows any member of the public to bypass U.S. Highway 87 alternate route and get to Sheridan in Buffalo if the trip is absolutely essential.
