Ask any sports traveler and they will tell you that building a schedule is just as fun. Building a college football travel plan comes with some challenges, such as a specific schedule and more extensively, but it is surprisingly satisfying to put together.
How does the road to CFB sausage work? Where do these programs come from? I get into all that.
With 131 FBS teams required to play 13 games each, the college football program has more than 1,700 games. That is divided into 65 games per week (usually in FCS matches). To choose One It can be scary at first, much less 12-13 times.
My world is in Google Sheets – to CFB Road and more. There I organized my work schedule, personal finances, vacation plans, everything on Google Sheets. So naturally, that’s where I start.
The excitement of the project is here. Completely blank board with unlimited options. Let me know if you need to calculate how much.
Where to start?
Another common place for sports travelers – football, in particular – is our unwavering love FBSchedules.com. Kevin Kelly does God’s work on that site, and I spend more time there than I do on any website.
You know which stadium you went to and did not go to. You know which way to go and which way to go. Starting there will reduce 65 games a week to 25 (probably more or less). So already you are looking at a more manageable crop.
I work at Pillar Games. Games I know they have To strike. In 2022, Michigan, Ohio, was one of those pole games, so those pencils were filled in those weeks. A.D. In 2021, the Army from the Air Force and Nebraska had Pillar games in Oklahoma. My program was out of order.
It is a list of stadium aspirations similar to column games. A.D. In 2021, Arkansas was on that list, so I went to get some Arkansas games of my choice. 6-7 indoor games options per year are limited and you should then work around those stadiums instead of trying to crowd them out.
Increase efficiency
Although most FBS stadiums are on the same stretch of road, there are many close-knit locations. Combining these areas can help in unintentional stadiums.
What I mean by this – and there is nothing wrong with these places that I am going to list – driving for four hours and half an empty Joe Alilet Stadium (Louisiana Tech) can be hard to convince yourself. However, in 2021, Louisiana hosted South South Missions on Friday night and neighboring ULM hosted Arkansas on Saturday. Combining the two together is a must.
The same is true for many MAC stadiums; Will Western Michigan play Thursday and Saturday Notre Dame? Combine them together. Miami (OH) can host games on Wednesday, Cincinnati Friday and Louisville on Saturday. Do a weekend outside of it.
These places are not common, so I usually prefer these pairs in advance. In 2021, I worked long weekends from Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Florida To open the season. Efficiency is important when trying to hit all 131 FBS stadiums.
Filling in the gaps
After penning on column games, wish list stadiums and nearby stadium combinations, there are only a few weeks left. That’s when I started to sort out the games I wanted to clean up and write.
My next “requirements” are the big opponents who visit small schools. Indiana, for example, will play Cincinnati in 2022. When such a regional power-up visit to Cincinnati (we can argue their name), it brings a lot of fans to the stadium and sometimes increases its chances. Games like this are amazing.
Scroll to continue.
From there, I wondered how long and how far I would go in the neighboring weeks. In 2018, I did Oklahoma State (4.5 hours), Tulane / LSU (7.5 hours) and Houston / Mississippi State (13 hours) in consecutive weeks. The trip was very tiring, so I followed up with UTSA (40 minutes). Burning travel is a real thing.
I’m looking for new stadium opportunities and fun games on weekends.
And, just like that, the program is perfect! right…?
All of the above creates a schedule draft. Games move, opportunities are open and choices change. Once I get “Draft 1”, I will continue to edit for months, sometimes after the winter begins.
When everything is done and completed, I will easily have more than 20 repetitions in the same program. That’s why I prefer to share my schedule every month, not all at once.
At that time, adjustments will come. For example, in 2021, I was about to finish my career in Louisiana Tech. However, on Wednesday, the day before the game, I was given free seats and a full TCU Kansas club seat. Such opportunities cannot be missed and I had to take them.
Ask any sports traveler – their schedule is fluid. Gathering together and putting new places and games into the cradle is a fun puzzle.
And finally, that blank sheet looks like this:
Challenges
I wish it seemed simple. Sometimes things do not work out.
I often had time or dates to play games and it ruined my entire weekend circuit. Some weeks there are good games and you have to choose one game over another. Other weeks are easier on the big games and you just have to pick one.
Since college football programs are not designed to meet the needs of travel enthusiasts, there are some weekends in the city where there are no teams. For example, in the 6th week of the 2022 season, you will see Ohio State, Michigan, Akron, Kent State and Toledo along the way. Penn State is peaceful. At the beginning of the year I had a Cincinnati dock and went to 25 bowling green games. So where are you going?
In this article, it looks like a candidate for BYE Week.
As much as I want the road to CFB to be my full-time job, this is not the case. Wednesday night is a very good game against Marshall in Marshall and will make a good start in Huntington, but that will require two PTO days.
Sometimes, it just doesn’t work.
However, the process is so exciting and always changing, opening up the next season’s construction program is one of my favorite times of the year.
