The United States Senate held a hearing Tuesday to review the 2022 National Travel and Tourism Strategy published by the Department of Commerce.
The meeting, chaired by Nevada Senator Jackie Rosen, chair of the Tourism, Trade and Export Promotion Trade Sub-Committee, was designed to analyze the strategy to strengthen the global competitiveness of the US travel and tourism industry.

The subcommittee heard from two groups of witnesses, first of all Grant Harris, Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Analysis, who now oversees the Department of Commerce’s Travel and Tourism Efforts.

The second panel featured MGM Resorts International CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle and Discover Puerto Rico CEO Brad Dean. Both men work on the US Travel and Tourism Advisory Board.
“By following the new national travel and tourism strategy, the federal government can support this growth and help it fully recover from travel and tourism businesses in Nevada and the country,” Senator Rose said during the hearing.
The National Travel and Tourism Strategy was first developed in 2012, but Senator Rosen urged colleagues to renew the program due to the cholera epidemic.
As a result, the Department of Commerce announced in June a new strategy to boost the global tourism industry, aiming to attract 90 million international visitors by 2027 and achieve an estimated annual cost of $ 279 billion.
“The travel tourism strategy has four pillars,” Harris said. “First, promote the United States as a destination; second, facilitate travel to the United States and the United States; third, ensure diverse, inclusive and accessible travel experiences, and fourth, promote resilient and sustainable tourism.”
The National Travel and Tourism Strategy includes the promotion of a variety of tourism practices beyond the coast, reducing the industry’s contribution to climate change, and building a sector that can withstand natural disasters and public health concerns.
