NEW ORLEANS – The NOLA Coalition – a group of local nonprofits, civic organizations and businesses that have joined forces to address crime and quality of life issues – supported the City Council’s July 21 vote approving a pay raise for New Orleans police. Officers and previously the council have lifted a ban on using facial recognition technology to help solve crimes.
“Yesterday, the New Orleans City Council voted to approve a general pay raise for NOPD officers and restore access to NOPD technology,” a spokesman for the coalition said in an emailed statement. “The first is improving retention and morale, and the second is giving the NOPD more tools to keep our city safe, with patrol lines and procedures to ensure accuracy. The NOLA Coalition, representing a wide swath of New Orleans, is working with the Council and the Mayor’s Office to work together for a better New Orleans for our children and all of our citizens.” He praises them for working.
The coalition endorsed the wage increase and the use of technology in a press release on July 12 for “force multipliers.” An updated list of recommendations and coalition members can be found at nolacoalition.info.
Privacy advocates condemned the council’s vote, saying they were concerned about misuse of the technology. The Council He banned the use of certain surveillance technologies in 2020, but leaders’ sentiments about the issue have improved as violent crime rises.
