With a career spanning seven decades, multi-talented actress, activist, fitness guru and beauty brand ambassador Jane Fonda shows no signs of slowing down as she celebrates her 85th birthday on December 21st.

The octogenarian, famous for her films and exercise videos for her commitment to tackling the climate crisis – who recently declared herself cancer-free after undergoing a course of chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma – has brought us some real icons. Style Moments Through the Years.

Barbarella

Jane Seymour Fonda, daughter of American actor Henry Fonda, was born in New York in 1937. Following in her father’s footsteps, she began her acting career on Broadway before landing her first big screen career.

Fonda reached sex-symbol status with the 1968 release of Barbarella, a sci-fi spoof in which she donned a series of skimpy futuristic outfits to play the title character of a space traveler.

The following year, Fonda received her first Academy Award nomination, in the Best Actress category for the critically-acclaimed comedy Horses Shoot, Don’t You?

The prophetic film, set during the Great Depression, revolves around a dance marathon in which couples compete for cash prizes. Fonda wore a thirty-something red polka dot dress to play failed actress Gloria Beatty.

The comedy caper sees the working women dress up as their sexist bosses, with Fonda donning many of the office outfits of the era, such as pussybow shirts and pencil skirts, complete with extravagant details and voluminous hair.

Exercise guru

Jane Fonda is leading an exercise class at Jane Fonda Fitness in Beverly Hills (Alumni/PA).

After publishing a fitness book, Jane Fonda’s Workout was released on VHS in 1982 and launched the fitness craze.

Fans also flocked to buy clothes like the actor-turned-aerobics instructor, who opted for leg warmers and shiny leotards.

Embracing a sleeker, more polished look in the ’90s, Fonda’s At the 1992 Primetime Emmys, she wowed in a black glittery sleeveless dress.

Academy Awards 2000

Wearing Vera Wang – best known as her bride – at the 2000 Oscars, Fonda chose a cream satin corset dress paired with fingerless opera gloves and a matching shawl.
