Copenhagen has cemented itself as one of the most influential cities in the fashion world, and one look at the street style looks from Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Week Demonstrations proved the reason. From edgy to sophisticated, the fashion elite descended on the city and flexed their fashion chops to excel in modeling this year’s latest trends.
Whether it’s proof of the cowboy boot’s versatility or reimagined jeans, there’s no shortage of beauty inspiration to take away from week one.
Below, seven key street style trends from Copenhagen Fashion Week 2022.
Barbiecore
After the release of Margot Robbie Barbie Barbicore, the film slated for next year, has established itself as the color palette du jour. The bright pink color has been seen everywhere from the runway (think Valentino’s 22-look collection) to red carpets, festivals and Instagram feeds around the world.
With the likes of Anne Hathaway, Florence Pugh and Gigi Hadid embracing the high fashion aesthetic, we knew it wouldn’t be long until the street style ensemble embraced it with equally open arms. The streets of Copenhagen were awash with eye-catching shades, seen in leather-like corsets, cargo pants, bikini tops and jumpsuits.
A colorful aesthetic exudes fun and playfulness, injecting a much-needed dose of color into an otherwise neutral outfit, and reminds us that our fashion choices can be as big or as small a statement as we want them to be.
Neon color blocking
Speaking of colour, neon hues were equally popular on the streets of Copenhagen, a color block in a modern mashup that saw clashing tones work seamlessly together. A pair of bright pink pants met their best friend in a lime green, long sleeve with feather sleeves, while a bright blue tank top perfectly complimented a sparkly yellow midi dress and neon green mules.
Of course, traditional color blocking does not leave the main place. A lime green shirt was seamlessly paired with a bright shade of green, worn as a puffer vest and more suited as a life jacket.
Since it’s winter in Copenhagen right now, a bright, lollipop-esque color scheme is almost a given. With warmer weather comes the urge to add pops of color here and there, but we’re leaning towards neon in a big way.
Chunky Loafers
The studded loafer trend is undoubtedly here to stay, proving that there is one shoe to rule them all. After all, when it comes to shoes, it’s best to let the shoes speak for themselves, so most outfits are centered around slimming miniskirts or skirts and bare feet.
If you’re looking to break up a potentially controversial leg look, a pair of white socks will go a long way. Worn at ankle level or higher, it’s the perfect level of contrast to dress up an already eye-catching outfit.
Mixing high and low fashion
Graphic tees and designer mini dresses with high edges have proven to be a powerful combination for those who want to create a casual look. While oversized band tees may not be what comes to mind when you look at fashion week outfits, Copenhagen proved that it’s possible to build a high fashion scene around a wardrobe staple. – It’s just a matter of finding the right accessories to go with it.
Oversized sunglasses, designer handbags and a pair of heels are go-to choices across the board, upping the overall mood and proving that graphic tees are worthy of a place in your fashion week wardrobe.
Cowboy boots
The energy has been captured and it’s easy to see why. While we never thought cowboy boots could be such a versatile shoe, the street style proved otherwise.
Skin-tight maxi dresses, cropped shorts and high-cut mini skirts are all doing strong business with the versatility of the knee-high cowboy boot. Certainly not limited to boho-worshippers, the #ranchcore aesthetic can be tailored to your specific style, which The perfect wear-all-day transitional shoe between sneakers and heels.
If the trend is embraced by the likes of Elsa Hosk and Emily Ratajkowski, we’d say it’s here to stay.
Slouchy fit
Tailored clothing has been the dominant everyday workwear choice for the past several years, but more recently, a relaxed, understated approach has taken hold. Oversized pants that go with the floor, oversized jackets and long sleeves are all here to stay, with a new approach to modern casual wear that works in and out of the office.
This time, however, it was completely replaced by a mixture of fitted and baggy looks. Yellow pants paired with tailored jackets, open cut shirts were seen with lasers and shorts offering the best of both worlds in a battle between oversized and fitted.
Knitwear
Cottagecore may feel 2021, but the stranglehold on our wardrobes remains. Emma Chamberlain has long advocated for knitwear, but Copenhagen’s street scene shows that knitted designs can be very versatile.
Knit cardigans and mini skirts in a variety of colors and designs were spotted on the streets of Copenhagen, reminding us that knitwear isn’t just for the colder months.
Reimagined jeans
Time and time again, denim has proven to be one of the most timeless of all fabrics. While jean trends may change every year, our obsession with denim has remained steadfast due to its versatility and adaptability to any climate, trend and body type.
Copenhagen saw an explosion of medium-length denim skirts, with large jackets and statement shoes (boots, heels or loafers). A look popularized by the likes of Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, the denim midi dress has been reimagined for a whole new generation (one that once associated beauty with ultimate mom power).
Denim jackets in a variety of designs were also seen, from cropped tailoring to oversized styles, reinforcing the denim-on-denim look this season and beyond.
