The low bun is officially back at New York Fashion Week S/S ’23

There are some hairstyle trends that are prominent. feel like So easy to pull off, but once you’re in your own bathroom you’ll realize just how hard they are to do. For a long time, the low bun seemed to fall into this category. It’s a simple, breezy, and minimal-looking style, but if you’re not used to slicking your strands down and back, it can be a little intimidating. (Also, for a few of us unlucky souls, it could easily fall into Founding Fathers territory.) But the low bun is back on the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023 runways, and luckily, it looks pretty accessible for it. Season.

This isn’t the first time the low bun has been seen at NYFW. The style is at its peak for Spring/Summer 2021, with designers such as Alice + Olivia, Sandy Liang and Tom Ford sending glittering iterations down the runway. But at that time, things were very colorful. Embellished hairpins and edgy bows accentuated these low-maintenance styles, helping to give them a little extra flair.

And while accessories seem to take a back seat this season, the NYFW S/S ’23 loafers look a little less. This isn’t your typical one-size-fits-all low bun. In fact, on the back, it seems that the hairdressers are approaching the style with the kind of adventure that you choose yourself, which makes it more accessible. Christian Siriano, Patbo, and Alice + Olivia have all featured their version of this style. And although they may differ in inspiration and technique, there are a few lines to this trend: lots of gel, structural accents and high shine.

It’s only midway through New York Fashion Week S/S ’23, so expect to see this trend continue to grow. But if you’re ready to jump on your low buns ASAP, keep up with some of the week’s best looks so far.

Christian Siriano

It’s no surprise that Christian Siriano’s beauty vision is inspired by Old Hollywood. The designer presented his Spring/Summer ’23 show at NYFW in Elizabeth Taylor’s old apartment, fueling the evening with silver screen glamour. But his hair reminded him of another star of his era.

Lead stylist Lacy Redway says: “The bun is a modern take on Audrey Hepburn’s bun—definite and stylish, with a little edge. First, she created a deep side part and swept the hair into a low bun with the help of TRESemmé’s Tres Two Extra Hold Gel. Redway then used a comb to create contrast across the forehead, giving the look a little more texture and dimension.

For added hold, Redway applied TRESemmé Tres Two Extra Hold Volumizing Mousse to the style and blow-dried to give hair maximum shine and shine. She finished with a generous mist of hairspray to set the whole look, ensuring there were zero flyaways as the models walked down the runway.

Jason Wu

Jason Wu’s look was decidedly ’90s, with smudgy lids and cool-girl buns. Olaplex Lead Stylist Jimmy Paul uses a handful of the brand to smooth and condition strands so they look healthy and bouncy, not hard and frizzy. “The inspired ’90s New York City girl is going fast,” Paul told TZR. “It’s to pretend it’s not about the hair.”

To start, Paul worked Olaplex No. 9 Nourishing Hair Serum into each of the girls’ strands. “It’s a mild thermal insulation that has a little texture and grip,” he explains. If the models have thick hair, use No 6. Bond Smoother to make the hair smaller and tighter. He braided his hair and finished it off with No 7. Bonding Oil before twisting it into a bun. He left the ends free and simply flat ironed them to help them keep their shape.

Alice + Olivia

At Alice + Olivia there were two types of buns: the classic low bun and one that hits the middle of the head. the reason? “Some of the girls were wearing trucker hats, so they needed low-cuts,” said Kevin Hughes, Moroccanoil’s global artistic director. Models with buns in the center are emphasized with a scrunchie.

Hughes introduced the Moroccanoil treatment, or Moroccanoil treatment, to shine light on his models’ hair, then apply the brand’s smoothing lotion to help eliminate frizz. Hughes was looking for hairstyles, and for models who don’t have much, he used tricks. “We’re clipping the hair with clips, spritzing a little bit of Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray, and before removing the clips, we’re going to spray a little bit of hairspray,” he says. “This creates the movement we want to see in the hair.”
