The leaked documents reveal Uber’s secret relationship with great politicians

More than 100,000 documents have confirmed the secret of Uber’s relationship with some of Europe’s greatest politicians while French President Emmanuel Macron served as Minister of Economy.

More than 124,000 emails, including more than 83,000 emails between 2013 and 2017, show that Uber’s controversial former leader Travis Kalanik had a first name with Macron when the company tried to start a business in France. Another email from Uber to Macron told the future president that the company was “extremely grateful” for the assistance, adding that “the openness and acceptance we have received is unusual in government-industry relations.”

Macron’s spokesman told the BBC that his work had naturally connected him with a number of companies involved in the rapid transformation of the service sector in those years.

The documents also show the length of time Uber was willing to go to checkpoint police, including a murder switch, police outside company computers in the event that one of their buildings was invaded by law enforcement.
