Google recently released an update for Google TV that introduces a new ‘App hibernation’ feature that offers increased performance and helps users free up storage space.

According to a recent post on the Google TV support page, ‘App Hibernation’ forces apps that haven’t been used in the last 30 days to hibernate. The feature on Android S and above was first introduced in Android 12 and allows users to free up valuable storage space without having to uninstall the app from the device. It works by force stopping the app and clearing any temporary files stored by the app. This way, users can wake up an app and use it immediately.

A few months ago, Google made it mandatory for developers to upgrade their apps and games from APK to AAB format by May 2023. AAB, an Android app bundler, reduces the size of an app by about 25 percent, making it free for users. Book more space on their Google TV.

When it comes to performance improvements, Google says they’ve made changes to the device and remote control to reduce latency. The new version of Google TV improves the response time between the TV and the remote control, as well as the loading animation when the device reboots.

In August last year, Google rolled out an update to Google TV that reduced lag, improved performance and introduced new ‘free storage’ among other features.
