This short Point-CounterPoint is a lightly edited Twitter DM exchange between Don and Steve after Jackson Rutledge’s last start.
Looks like Rutledge has a travel issue 😃. A former 1st round pick (17th overall) of the Washington Nationals in the 2019 draft, at one point it looked like the next big thing for the Nats. The 6’8″ right-handed pitcher with a big 240-pound frame seems to be the epitome of the hard-throwing rookie general manager Mike Rizzo wants on the mound.
While Rutledge dominated his draft year, the 2020 COVID-cancelled season looks to change everything. Routledge By 2021, it is expected that the world will be the world’s largest planet.
Don: After yesterday’s great game I decided to look at Rutledge’s game logs. Noticed an interesting pattern. All but one of his worst games have been on the road. It might be an interesting question for research.

Steve: Interesting with Joel Hanrahan as his pitching coach. You hope they see the analysis.
DonIt might be interesting to forward this observation to Joel. But I guess he knows it.
His home ERA is 2.95. The route is 8.51. The pattern is consistent. It’s not like he had one bad road game that blew up his ERA.
Steve: That’s pretty incredible. But the last game was a road game.
Don: Yes – there are exceptions. But there is a pattern.
Steve: Maybe he can do something to fix it. That’s a wide difference.
I think it’s definitely interesting.
Don: something to watch out for.
He has had two consecutive road games this year. Each time it was good for the first; Bad for the second. And most/all of these other road games were good for road trips.
Steve: Interesting. It’s almost like experiencing time on the road. Then you have a player like Josiah Gray who does better on the road.
DonI think minor league pitchers don’t get sent forward for road games as much as MLB pitchers.
Steve: You would be right. Let’s see how the next launch goes.
Don: The next game will probably be the home game. So we don’t learn anything from the next game in terms of patterns.
SteveRight and he could be promoted or at least should be promoted.
