Taking your laptop with you on a plane flight seems like it should be the perfect combination of technology, allowing you to float through the air while making progress on a work project, allowing your creative writing juices to flow. Of course, that flight is preceded by the hassle of having to dig your laptop out of your carry-on bag, take it out of the bag, and pass the device through pre-flight security, reversing the entire process one more time. The airport staff will give you the OK.

Although, thanks to JL, there’s now a way around that inconvenience. The airline has developed a new X-ray CT scan system called Gel Smart Security that allows you to keep your laptop in hand during check-in and use a few other smart ideas to get you to the gate as stress-free as possible.

The layout is in the shape of the letter J and has three places at the start where passengers can place their luggage and jacket trays. In addition to your laptop, you may leave bottles containing any permitted liquids in your bag. Slide the tray forward (make sure it’s wide enough) onto the rollers, and it will lower the line to the checkpoint.

The spiral starting section is designed in such a way as to prevent jams by allowing any tray to be filled and pass through the metal detector. Assuming there are no problems, on the other hand, bring your belongings and you can be on your way, all without having to repack your laptop or liquids.

Tokyo Haneda JL was the first airport to use the system, and thanks to the program’s expansion this month, there are now a dozen smart security lanes in Terminal 1 (four at South Wing Security Checkpoint B, three at South Wing Checkpoint C and North Wing Checkpoint F, and two at North Wing Security Checkpoint F). Wing Check Point E). Currently, they can only be used for domestic flights, but we hope the system will work smoothly and expand to other airports and international routes in the future.
