The Huskies begin GLIAC play with a third straight win



Hammond, Ind – For the second straight day, win or loss, it came down to the final match of the afternoon and for the second straight day, Lauren Opalewski had 6 singles, leading Michigan Tech to its third straight GLIAC title with a 4-3 win at Purdue Northwestern. Saturday at the Park Forest Tennis Club.

Similar to Friday’s 4-3 win over Davenport, the Huskies had to come from behind to drop a team-high two points to win on the road. Top seed Dominika Bobic (Wrocław, Poland) continued her strong run at No. 1 with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Sienna Lopez. Bobick (2022 All-GLIAC honorable mention) is 6-3 this spring at the senior position.

Grace Island was followed by a 6-4, 6-1 win over Arnie Reidy at No. 2. The Pride pushed back with wins at Nos. 3 and 4 to give Opalewski a 3-3 match. Salma defeated Rasla 6-3, 6-2.

“The girls were very strong today and pushed through all the challenges they faced,” head coach Christine D’Agostini-Yep said.

The Huskies (6-4, 3-0 GLIAC) are the first team to three conference wins and have four regular season games remaining, closing out MTU’s spring with three straight at home on Friday, March 31 at Saginaw Valley State at 10 a.m. Matches are all against opponents ranked in the ITA Top-50.

Purdue Northwest (7-7, 2-1) plays at Ferris State on March 31.
