Wilmington, NC — The No. 11 Virginia Tech softball team closed out its opening weekend in run regulation with a 9-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in five innings. Peck (1-0) started and picked up the win for Virginia Tech in her pitching debut, going three shutout innings, giving up two hits, no walks, and striking out one. Jacobson came out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings, allowing three hits.
In the batter’s box, the Hokies walked the junior. Eddie GreenHe went 2-for-3 on the day with two home runs and four RBI. Jr Emma Ritter He went 3-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. High James Bailey She continued her hot streak for Virginia Tech, stringing together three hits over three outings, adding three triples and two RBI. Bailey ends up leading the team with a .714 batting average heading into the weekend.
How did it happen?
The Hokies started scoring in the first inning when Bailey tripled to Ritter. From there, Tech tacked on runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, with their biggest score coming in the third when they scored five times. That five-run inning included two Virginia Tech home runs from Ritter and Green.
Tech will travel to Florida next weekend to compete in the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational, where they will play five games starting the weekend. The Hokies will face Oklahoma State, Nebraska, UCLA, Arizona and USF from a season ago. The Cowgirls, Bruins and Wildcats all advanced to the World Series.
