The final day of the Ohio Softball Division Tennessee Tech Tournament

Cookeville, Tenn. – The Ohio State softball team (9-12) returned to action Saturday afternoon (March 11) to complete the 2023 tournament at Tennessee Tech. Ohio opened the day by defeating Tennessee Tech (1-20), 8-3, before rebounding in the afternoon at Robert Morris (7-10), 4-3.



Game 1: Robert Morris 4, Ohio 3
Overall, Ohio scored three runs in six balls and committed one error, while Robert Morris scored four runs in six balls and did not commit an error.


Individually, high Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) Went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored as a freshman. Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two hits and one run scored. Jr Yasmin Logan (Pittsburgh, PA) had one hit and scored a run. Shelby West (Marion, Ohio) added a hit and an RBI.


In a circle, first step Skip Miller (Bradford, Ohio) made the start, pitching seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits, walking five and striking out five.


Robert Morris got on the board in the first with a 1-0 lead on two hits and one error. Ohio got its first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Dawe singled down the left field line with a leadoff single. However, Ohio could not capitalize, sending the game into the third inning with RMU leading, 1-0.


The Bobcats threatened again in the bottom of the fourth inning after Hummel led off with an infield single. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. However, Ohio still held a 1-0 lead with Robert Morris sending the game into the fifth inning.


RMU rallied in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on one hit to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the frame.


Ohio rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Hummel singled and advanced to second on Logan’s single. After junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) Reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases, Dave’s two-RBI single put the Bobcats on the board with runners on first and third with one out. After high school Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) Reached on a fielder’s choice, Westler singled to left, scoring Dwayne, tying the game at 3-3 going into the top of the seventh inning.


RMU took the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring a run on an RBI single to take a 4-3 lead into the final frame.


After Hummel drew two walks, Ohio tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, falling 4-3.



Game two: Ohio 8, Tennessee Tech 3
Overall, Ohio scored eight runs on 11 hits and did not commit an error, while Tennessee Tech scored three runs on eight hits and did not commit an error.


Individually, Hoffner went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Paoli had an RBI and a run scored. Dawe finished the day with two hits and an RBI, while Logan added a hit and two RBI. Hummel finished the game with an RBI and a run scored as a junior. Sydney Green (Mokena, Ill.) had a hit and scored two runs. Westler added success as a junior. Tori O’Brien (Mason, Ohio) issued three walks and scored two runs.


In the club, a graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) got the start and went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking no batters and striking out four.


The Bobcats struck in the top of the second inning. After Hoffner singled to lead off the inning, Gray was hit by a pitch. After both runners move on a wild pitch, second CC Caid (Hilliard, Ohio) took a walk to load the bases. Moments later, O’Brien drew a walk of her own to score Hoffner and put Ohio up 1-0. Later in the game, Logan singled down the right field line followed by a sacrifice fly from Paoli to make it 4-0 Ohio after two innings.


Tennessee Tech got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on four innings to cut Ohio’s lead to 4-2 after three innings.


The Bobcats got a run back in the top of the fourth. After O’Brien and Hummel drew walks to put runners on second and third with no outs, Logan recorded a sacrifice fly to give Ohio a 5-2 lead. Then with two outs, an RBI single from Dawe allowed Hummel to score and give the Bobcats a 6-2 lead.


After a scoreless fifth for Ohio, Tennessee Tech got a run going in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a solo homerun to cut Ohio’s lead to 6-3 after five complete frames. However, Ohio came back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring one run on an RBI single from Hoffner, increasing Ohio’s lead to 7-3.


Ohio added a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from Hummel, helping to secure an 8-3 win for the Bobcats.



Next
Ohio finally returns home to open Mid-American Conference play March 17-18 when they host Miami. Friday’s first pitch at OSF is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
