The cloud problem crashes thousands of websites

Thousands of websites went offline for nearly an hour on Tuesday morning, including several of the world’s top news sites, online streaming services, online retailers and even the UK government, which affected millions of internet users.

Connectivity issues that last nearly an hour appear to affect news sites such as the BBC, the New York Times and FT.com, Spotify, Twitch, Hulu and HBO Max, Stripe Pay and the message board. Reddit. All online services reach hundreds of millions of people every day.

The disruption of the UK’s network of websites, gov.uk, may have caused problems for people booking vaccines against Covid-19 or reporting test results.

A Silicon Valley-based Internet infrastructure provider called Fastly is believed to be behind the shutdown. Fastly did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It works quickly with a content distribution network, designed to facilitate faster loading times of larger web pages and files, such as music and video. Other major CDN providers include Cloudflare, Akamai and Limelight.

CDNs store the data of their corporate clients on servers around the world, facilitating the loading of the “backbones” of the Internet by bringing the content closer to consumers’ smartphones and computers.

Fastly’s online status page began reporting problems with its CDN services at 09.58 UTC.

About 45 minutes later, he said, “The problem has been identified and a solution is being implemented.”

In addition to several prominent media groups, the Fastly website lists e-commerce platforms Shopify and Stripe, and retailers such as Wayfair, Boots, Dunelm, Ticketmaster and Deliveroo among its customers.

Stripe said in a tweet from its status page, “We are currently investigating a problem with the control panel and support site that cannot be loaded. We will post an update soon.”

Shares of Fastly, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of just under $ 6 billion, were about 2% lower in pre-market trading on Tuesday. The ten-year-old company is headquartered in San Francisco.
