DeKALB – Effective Feb. 27, a current weight limit will limit vehicles to more than 8,000 pounds. From driving on certain DeKalb roads.
The City of DeKalb has placed restrictions on overloaded vehicles on certain streets due to icy cycles that can severely damage road conditions.
Blocked roads include South First Street from Fairview Drive to Taylor Street and Pleasant Street from Enterprise Drive to Loves Road. Other routes include Beltley Road and Malta Road, from South First Street to Route 23, starting from Annie Glidden Road to the west city limits and Guller Road. Finally, restrictions on Bethany Road extend from Tygert Lane to the western city limits.
Prohibited vehicles exceeding the weight limit are those weighing more than 8,000 pounds per axle and weighing more than 11,000 pounds per axle to single-axle vehicles with a gross weight of 33,000 pounds or more.
City of DeKalb Roads and Utilities Director Andy Raih made the announcement as select roads began to deteriorate, according to a press release.
Freeze cycles occur when air temperatures constantly change above and below freezing temperatures, causing water to freeze and thaw more frequently. This creates a weakened surface for asphalt and snowmelt and soil under roads that can crack and expand from rainwater.
According to the City of DeKalb, the selected roads showed signs of deterioration at the surface and base level, and were determined to be severely damaged or destroyed if large vehicles were allowed to travel.
The travel restrictions on overbooked vehicles will be extended only until the end of the freeze cycle, a seasonal event based on warming for the DeKalb area.
