It is one of the newest and most accessible volcanoes in Iceland to visit and you can see it up close by following our advice. In fact, visiting the erupting volcano at Fagradalsfjal is wild and one place you can’t miss when visiting Iceland.
So, to visit Fagradalsfjall volcano and make that easier, we want to share all our tips on how to get to Fagradalsfjall… and most importantly, how to see it safely and from the best views.
We did quite a few hikes to see the volcano around Fagradalsfjal and absolutely loved it.

How to get to Fagradalsfjall eruption station?
Visiting Fagradalsfjall is relatively easy if you have a car. It is about a 55-minute drive from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. In addition, it is only 45-minutes from the main international airport Keflavik.
Alternatively, if you are visiting from the Blue Lagoon (15 minute drive) or the nearby town of Grindavik (10 minute drive) you are really close.
In general, it is easy to drive to Fagradalsfjal eruption site and walk from the designated parking areas.
Where are the designated parking spaces for Fagradalsfjall?
We parked at the designated ‘Parking 1’ site, which is the best place to park ‘Path A’ to visit the eruption of Fagradalsfjal volcano.
That said, it fills up quickly and you may have to park in other parking lots across the street. You can see more of what we’ve covered in this article on the embedded Google Map.
Now, you have to pay for parking, and there is a QR code to scan to pay online. That being said, we tried to pay and the website wouldn’t accept any of our payment methods. Just an FYI.

Make sure you book your Fagradalsfjal guided walking tour well before you visit Iceland. Walks sell out quickly, especially since everyone wants to visit the erupting volcano in Fagradalsfjal – while it’s still active.
Although, if you’re a seasoned traveler (and have a car), reservations aren’t always necessary. You can complete the walk alone.
How to get to Fagradalsfjal – hiking trails
Therefore, there are several different hiking trails to visit the erupting volcano in Fagradalsfjal. Some are very difficult, some are far.
Choosing how to get to Fagradalsfjal and your route will depend on the conditions of the day and how you feel on the hike.

Personally, ‘Path A’ is the best hiking trail to visit the volcano in Fagradalsfjal. You get to one of the closest points to the new eruption and it’s amazing to witness.
It’s easily the best hiking trail to see the volcano erupt.
Now, the walk itself is rocky, bumpy and slippery at points and takes about 15km (about 10 miles) to get there and back (to parking lot 1).
Also, the elevation rises rapidly at around 300-400 meters at the beginning of the hike and it is worth taking this part a little slower.
After that initial incline, the trail becomes very rocky and you’ll need a good pair of hiking boots to get through these. A fellow hiker broke his ankle here the day before our hike. And it’s easy to see why.

The good thing though is that the trail remains relatively flat from this point on.
Well, until you get to a volcanic eruption! At the end of the hike there is a big drop as you approach Fagradalsfjall eruption station.
Remember, when traveling on the road, you must always stick to the wooden markers (wooden poles) to stay on the trail.
This road is still new and it can be easy to cross the road if you are not paying attention.
Oh, and trust me, these signs are important if you’re hiking at night. It is black and the only thing that helped us get back to the car (especially with the fog).
In general, allow around 6-8 hours to comfortably complete this hike (and spend plenty of time at the volcanic eruption site).
After all, you don’t want to rush this amazing experience.
How to get to Fagradalsfjall: Trail c
To reach here, we parked at ‘Parking 2’ (a little further from Parking 1). From here we joined ‘Path C’ which runs along the mountain ridges to see the face of the crater. You’ll be more impressed with the views than ‘Trail A’, but it’s still amazing to visit.
The trail (starting from the parking lot 2′) starts with a relatively steep descent to the ridge of the mountain. From here you walk towards the lava fields and see them smoking. It’s very special. After 4 km you reach the view. For the active eruption area of Fagradalsfjal.
Overall, give yourself between 6-8 hours to slow things down and really enjoy this place, complete it, relax and really enjoy it.
That said, of both walks, we always choose ‘Path A’. For us, it is the best way to visit the erupting volcano in Fagradalsfjal. It was very special to see the volcanic eruptions and lava fields so close.

How to ensure safety to visit Fagradalsfjall?
For safety reasons, always check the Safe Travel Iceland website for possible changes, closures or hazards. No one likes an indifferent passenger.
And remember, always listen to the advice given by experts ‘on the ground’ and on these official websites. Volcanic sites like Fagradalsfjal can be dangerous and deserve a lot of respect.
Finally, local government experts and ICE-SAR members remain around the Fagradalsfjal blast site. They are very easy to identify, so if you are unsure about any aspect of the walk, simply ask them.
They are very friendly and really helpful.
What should you take to visit the erupting volcano in Fagradalsfjal?
Make sure you wear multiple layers, one of which is waterproof. Throughout the walk, you will feel cold, hot and pretty wet if the cloud cover comes over the area.
It is much better to remove and apply these layers instead of just one thick layer that cannot be changed while walking.
Also make sure to pack some extra socks and base layers (just in case they get wet). Trust me, you don’t want to risk hyperthermia from getting wet on the 3-hour hike back to your car. Also, wear a hat, snood, scarf, and gloves if the weather is too cold.
Of course, bring enough water and plenty of power supplies and necessary snacks for an 8-hour hike.
Finally, carry a headlamp (or use your phone’s torch) for your walk in the dark. If you’re using the latter, make sure you carry an extra battery pack, take lots of photos on your phone and don’t run out of battery.
Oh, and be sure to download an offline Google Maps location (or pick up a paper copy). That way, you’ll always have the information to hand if you get lost.
