There were some developments. Thai Airways and travel vouchers The company was already there for travelers who couldn’t make their trip due to the pandemic (and TG no longer flies).

Those who have previously agreed to have their bookings converted to travel vouchers now have the option of applying for a refund (within two years from now) rather than trying to get an immediate refund.

Thai Airways has also extended the expiry date of these vouchers to December 31, 2023 to give more flexibility to those who choose to hold the vouchers.

You can find the guide on the Thai Airways website.

Refund your THAI Travel Voucher.

From July 1, 2022, customers can claim THAI travel voucher refunds via online registration by clicking here.

1. After making a refund, you will receive an automated email to acknowledge your request to refund the travel voucher.

2. THAI will process the refund in order after the delay. March 31, 2024

3. While waiting for the refund, if you want to redeem the travel voucher, you can book through www.thaiairways.com. Until December 31, 2023. Any remaining value will be refunded to you by March 31, 2024 as described in the Business Recovery Plan.

So the good news is that you can get your money back now. The bad news is it will take another two years (or up to Two years, but better prepare for the worst) to receive the money.

This was THAI’s solution to their business recovery plan to provide at least something to the passengers who were burned by the airline’s grounding.

Another option is to just wait and use the voucher.

Pick up your THAI travel voucher.

THAI is pleased to extend the service until December 31, 2023. For customers holding travel vouchers, the validity will be automatically extended without the need to contact us directly.

Simply follow the instructions on how to use your THAI Travel Voucher to make your next booking.

Thailand Travel Voucher Redemption Period: February 18, 2022 – December 31, 2023

Here are some instructions on how to apply your travel voucher to a booking.

Remember that you can book flights up to a year before the actual travel date.

I would say to anyone planning to travel either way (I’ve said it before) that applying and using the travel voucher is the easiest and most convenient way to use and keep the money you owe THAI.

Tracking your refund over the years will be difficult, remember that it’s been two years since the outbreak started and TG stopped most of their international services.

In fairness, we have to take into account, however, that THAI started regular flights from last summer (2021) when the sandbox model was launched, and until January 2022, it began to completely abandon isolation.

With a bit of flexibility, no one had to lose their money unless they adamantly refused to fly or Thailand made it work. In any case, receiving a voucher from a carrier that’s practically toast and filed for reorganization in bankruptcy court is more likely than many other travelers whose airlines have lost.

Summary

Thai Airways is offering refunds to those who have already issued travel vouchers valid until March 2024. Another option is to continue using the voucher and TG has updated the expiry date to 31 December 2023. Any remaining fare (if any) will be refunded to the passenger by March 31, 2024 as detailed in the Business Recovery Plan.

Usually, I always recommend doing a cashback refund or tracking it in some other way. If this is complicated or impossible, try the next best thing and a travel voucher is not the worst option. Especially for a major airline like THAI. Thankfully, Thai Airlines didn’t lose every penny when they got out of this “reorganization” and it wasn’t always expected that TG would fail completely.

At least one new company was formed overnight and took over the business, but such transactions burn a lot of customer goodwill if people get too fired up. The way it is being handled now is the right thing.
