A recent study by Forbes compared all 50 states and found Texas ranked the worst for the most significant amount of adults and youth who couldn’t afford care.

Forbes’s study found that Texas has the highest uninsured percentage of adults with mental illness at 21.5 percent among all 50 states. Additionally, among all 50 states, 40 percent of adult Texans with a cognitive disability couldn’t see a doctor because of cost, more than any other state. One of the most troubling statistics in the study is the number of youth who endured major depressive episodes in the last year and, because of high cost, couldn’t receive care. According to Forbes, over 73 percent of Texas youth are experiencing mental hardships and not getting mental health care.
The analysis also found that Texas has the fourth-most highest rate of children with private insurance that does not cover mental or emotional care. Advisors reviewed data from the National Center for Health Statistics, Mental Health America, the U.S. Census Bureau County Business Survey, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services to determine the numbers.
Texas’ network of county jails is currently the largest mental healthcare network in the state, according to the Texas Association of Counties. Harris County Jail specifically is known for being one of the area’s largest mental health treatment centers. In 2022 the jail registered its deadliest year for in-custody deaths in the facility’s history.
