Tennessee Tourism Leads Nation With Record $24 Billion in Domestic Travel Spending by 2021 – Clarksville Online

Tennessee Department of Tourist DevelopmentNashville, TN – Tennessee tourism will generate $24.2 billion in domestic and international travel spending by 2021, according to recently released economic impact data from the American Travel Association and Tourism Economics. It also marks the largest visitor spending nationally in Tennessee history.

Travelers in Tennessee make an estimated $66 million a day. Travel in Tennessee generates $1.9 billion in state and local tax revenue. Travel and tourism is the third largest employer in the state.




Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Mark Ezell highlighted efforts to continue the industry’s strong recovery.

“Tourism creates economic development and jobs that inspire the prosperity of every Tennessean,” said Governor Lee. “Our decision to prioritize a strong recovery has resulted in record tourism growth and we continue to welcome visitors to see all of Tennessee from the Mississippi River to the Great Smoky Mountains.”

“Tennis is crushing the national market share of visitors in our history,” said Mark Ezell, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “Tennis is one of the world’s top travel destinations because of our unparalleled beauty, diverse cities and towns, as well as our wonderful assets, including international attractions, music, cultural and historical sites. We are very grateful to this industry and our partners and blessed visitors to have access to these destinations domestically.” They support businesses, local restaurants and local lodging and support communities.

Highlights from the 2021 report:

  • Tennessee tourism generated a record $24 billion in domestic travel spending.
  • Travel and tourism is the third largest employer in TN by 2021.
  • Travelers in Tennessee make an estimated $66 million a day. Visitor spending in Tennessee is up 44.4% year-over-year. Visitor spending increased 35.7 percent nationally.
  • All 95 counties saw an increase in visitor spending over 2020.
  • 51 counties have fully recovered and surpassed their 2019 visitor spending record
  • Nine counties saw year-over-year travel spending growth of more than 40%, including Davidson, Chatham, Sevier, Union, Polk, Grundy, Knox, Blount and Hamilton.
  • Five counties, including Cheatham, Union, Lake, Hickman and Meigs, experienced more than 40% growth in travel spending in 2019.
  • Travel in Tennessee generates $1.9 billion in state and local tax revenue by 2021.
  • Travel-generated tax revenue from tourism saved each Tennessee household $755.41 in state and local taxes last year.


Entertainment and hospitality industry highlights

  • The leisure and hospitality industries supported 317,000 jobs in 2021, an 8% increase from 2020 and 91% from 2019 levels.
  • Leisure and hospitality revenues rebounded to record levels and outpaced inflation.
  • The leisure and hospitality industry has returned to pre-pandemic levels but is still struggling to meet travel demand.
  • Average entertainment and hospitality wages have increased as the industry competes for certain workers. The entertainment and hospitality fee increased to $17.71 in June 2020, up from $14.14 in 2020.

The 2021 Economic Impact on Travel report includes county data and economic impact of total industry spending. Partners and media can use the new online interactive dashboard for up-to-date state and county information. Economic Impact on Travel Report booklets will be presented at the Governor’s Hospitality and Tourism Conference on September 28-30 in Memphis.

The Tennessee Department of Tourism Development works with the Tennessee Tourism Committee, local convention and visitors bureaus, chambers of commerce, city and county leaders, tourism attractions and the hospitality industry of all 95 counties to promote travel to the state.
