Not everyone needs an excuse to celebrate, but researchers in Australia suggest that rest from daily activities has mental and physical health benefits, including for adults with mental illness.

“Physicians may recommend therapies such as music therapy, exercise, cognitive therapy, memory therapy, emotional stimulation, and adjusting the patient’s meal time and environment. June Wayne, a professor of tourism and hospitality management at Edith Cowan University’s School of Business and Law, says that all of these are common.

Wayne and fellow researchers suggest a paper Tourism Administration Travel therapy, such as music and art therapy, should be available to adults with dementia. “This study is the first to discuss the concept of how these tourism experiences can work as a mental health intervention,” he said.

Although some studies have shown the benefits of tourism health to people in general, Wayne said more research is needed to improve the lives of people living with diseases such as dementia and depression.

“Tourism is generally considered to be a form of entertainment that frees people from everyday life,” the researchers wrote.
