Heading into the Buffalo Bills’ preseason game against the Denver Broncos, we knew the Bills had the potential to put on a show. After all, much of the discussion has focused on head coach Sean McDermott’s decision to play most of his starters, while Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett opted to sit most of his starting 22. But this kind of performance…in the preseason? It might be fair to say that for most of the afternoon I felt like an NFL team lined up against something other than an NFL team.
Many points for children’s day
The pre-season is when the teams play before the scheduled games. But rarely does an NFL team go completely bonkers in a one-sided affair, preseason or otherwise. Of course, the score doesn’t count, nor do all the hit stats count. But as seen today, the difference between the two clubs is hard to ignore.
Statistics for everyone
Heading into halftime, the Bills were in cruise control with a 28-6 lead. Josh Allen went 3/3 for 45 yards and a nice touchdown toss to Gabe Davis early. All eyes were on Case Keenum, who struggled against the Indianapolis Colts last week. He had an inspiring performance in 16/18 passing for 192 yards and 1 TD. Keenum is this team’s QB2, and the Bills Mafia should embrace his talent.
As a team, Buffalo was 26 of 29 for 302 yards with 2 TDs and no turnovers. Three incompletions between three quarterbacks. Wow. And on the ground, they pounded it—209 yards on 27 carries between five running backs and Matt Barkley. Zach Moss and Duke Johnson each scored a pair of TDs.
Calling the latter idea
Buffalo scored every time they had the ball in the first half. It’s not ideal for a painting contest, but Kids’ Day’s dotting contest never promises. Finally, with 8:00 minutes left in the game, the Bills scored a field goal. They had to—and Matt Hack didn’t disappoint, pinning the Broncos on a 38-yard punt. Mercifully, Buffalo was firing on all cylinders.
Deep for days on sight
It didn’t matter who was on the field for the Bills — the entire roster was too much for the Broncos. From the end of the first half to the continuation of the dominance, Buffalo was seen to be more prepared and played with a sense of urgency. Roster decisions will be some of the toughest ever for everyone involved.
Injury news
McCloud went to the locker room for stitches following a facial laceration in the first quarter. He soon made it back to the sideline and had to hit hard late in the fourth. It’s great to see his resilience.
Waiting for next week
The Bills travel to North Carolina next Friday, August 26th at 7:00 PM ET to close out their preseason schedule against the Carolina Panthers.
