The man found in a white pickup truck in Torrance was the prime suspect in a mass shooting and is dead, authorities said.

He died of apparent gunshot wounds, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation.

Armored SWAT vehicles and law enforcement SUVs surrounded a white cargo van Sunday morning in a parking lot across from Del Amo Mall in Torrance. .

A van found in a parking lot near the Del Amo Fashion Center matched descriptions of a vehicle wanted in connection with a shooting in the San Gabriel Valley community of Monterey Park, about 30 miles northeast, and another incident in nearby Alhambra.

The van was wedged in front and back between two armored SWAT vehicles in the mall parking lot. A broken van window appears.

A man slumped over the steering wheel of the van, seemingly motionless.

The main suspect was later identified as 72-year-old Huo Khanh Tran.

An hour after the vehicle was surrounded by officers, members of the SWAT unit broke the passenger side window and entered the vehicle at around 1 p.m.

Witnesses said a white truck was seen leaving the scene of the crime in Alhambra late Saturday. Authorities responded to a dance hall minutes after responding to a fatal shooting at a Monterey Park dance studio.

“We had a vehicle described as a van of interest,” said Sheriff Robert Luna, “and there is a van that appears to be described to us in the city of Torrance.”

“Could he be our suspect? Maybe,” Luna said at a news conference.
