SALT LAKE CITY — Wendell Burt, a successful Utah businessman, philanthropist, family man and friend, died unexpectedly this week.
30 years ago, Burt started Burt Brothers Tire & Service with his brother, and when he was a successful businessman, an old friend said Burt’s legacy should be giving.
Over the years, Burt’s philanthropic heart has featured in many KSL stories, such as donating to the Boys and Girls Club, donating a car to a sick teacher, and even supporting a competitor in the tire industry after their store and son were racially abused.
“He had a big, big heart,” Doug Wright said. “He was always looking to see what he could get involved with that would really make a difference.”
KSL News Radio’s Doug Wright, a friend of more than 20 years, said they met through sponsorship at KSL but became fast friends.
“My friend Wendell was amazing, he was a force of nature, and he could just do things,” Wright said.
Together they created the Eureka to Light Ride to raise money for the small town.
“Wendell didn’t have a store there. He didn’t even have a business in Juab County or Utah County at that time. He just wanted to help, and he said, ‘Where do you need it?’ It really touched me when he asked me, ‘Would you like to do something?’ That was the kind of guy Wendell was,” Wright said.
As a philanthropist and owner of the successful Burt Brothers Tire business, Wright said Burt was a better friend.
“I’m going to miss Wendell’s big heart. He was always there,” Wright said.
